What do you get when you change your pinion gear up or down? higher or lower torque?
What do you get when you change your spur gear up or down? higher or lower top speed?

The gearing changes change torque vs. high speed depending if the motor wind can "pull" the gear properly. Some motors are RPM based and some are torque based. The theory stands that going down on your pinion size will make the motor spin up more, while going up on teeth will give you more top speed while sacrificing punch. The reality is, if you have an RPM based motor and try to gear to "tall" by going up on your pinion, you may end up achieving the exact opposite results you were shooting for.
It may sound kind of zen-like but my advice is treat each motor differently and "listen" to the RPM range that the motor wants to run in, then you can gear accordingly. The last thing you want to do is overgear your motor and make it run too hot because that tends to reduce the life of the motor greatly. Some heat is good, a lot of heat is bad.
Now for the spur gear. I don't recall the exact ratio numbers on the Z and there is no hard/fast rule but we do have a _general_ rule we follow even on the larger electric and gas cars. Changing a pinion gear is like changing 2-3 teeth on a spur gear. So if you want a small change, change the spur. If you want a bigger change, look to the pinion first.

So I just made a custom 40t spur gear for my mr-02 from a flat gear i found. i reamed out the center and drilled the holes for the bearings. Will this 40t give me more speed or torque? thanks
