I've heard of guys drilling holes in their x-speeds to fit the PN alloy motor mount.
Is there anything tricky in doing this? I'm guessing I just need to drill some holes in the same location as they are in my PN motor...
Thanks.
I've done this several times. The X-Speed cans are thinner on the ends or made of softer metal because if you turn the screws too hard the can will strip right out. This just happened last night, mostly from adjusting and re-adjusting the motor.
You need a 2mm drill bit and tap. DuBro makes these and are available at most hobby shops, maybe even here at the store. Be very careful laying out the holes.
The slightest bit you are off will show up when you try to fasten the motor can to the mount. I filed some of the bottom off the upper slot to allow for some variations of hole drilling. Some days I'm better than others. The easiest way is to get a can that is already pre-drilled and transfer the insides of the X-Speed into it.
I'd watch about drilling holes in the can, First thing on that is remove the armature. I messed up by drilling one without taking out that arm, and I ended up drilling into the windings on that arm. I'm with the others, get a BB can that is drilled to drop your armature in.
The PN Racing BB cans are also drilled and tapped for a machine thread, just don't have the brushes.
With my X speed can I used the standard self tapping screws on the motor, after I ground some off the end to clear the armature. The standard machine thread screws would pull right out.
