Help. Steering won't center.

I just bought a new r/c unit ii mz212 board and fitted it into an mr02 chassis today and can't get the steering to center at all.

When I move the steering trim on the transmitter, it will turn full left or full right - there is no threshold to keep the steering centered.

I've used different transmitters, different crystals with no luck.

The servo gears are brand new, no binding at all.

I've taken the servo gears out, and just had the steering motor and steering pot and manually turned the steering pot to try and find center but it won't. The steering motor will either go left or right and won't stay stationary.

I've tried adjusting the screw on the circuit board and it's already in the range of the tx steering trim.

Is my steering pot stuffed and sending wrong messages to the pcb ? Have I missed any other checks here ?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have an old pot you can check it against? It might be messed up, or perhaps wired incorrectly.

Where'd you buy it from? The Shop here has a very nice warranty policy, as far as I've heard.

hmm...

a couple of things might be going on...

have you tried your tx with a different car? if it works, then the problem may lie with the board...

if you have the same problem... your tx might be the problem...

you mentioned mr02... is the tiny washer for the servo gears in place? it's really tiny so sometimes it get's lost...

that's all i can offer at the moment... and try doing a search on steering centering...

here's one thread from the search results...
http://mini-zracer.com/forums/showth...enter+steering

i wish there would be a whole thread dedicated to "steering" issues... probably some of the mods can even make some of the posts a sticky as reference...

hope you get things sorted out... good luck

Thanks for your replies.

I have tried the tx with my other mr02 and it works fine.

I don't have the tiny washer in place as my iw02 didn't have that washer

This is an expensive build up converting everything from an iw02 to kyosho "except the servo gear shaft set".

Does the washer make that much difference ? I had the whole servo assembly detached from the steering pot.

Here is a video of what is happening. Keep an eye on the wheels and watch it slowly move to the other direction without me touching the controller.
If I adjust the steering trim ever so slightly, the same thing happens but in the opposite direction. There is no centering.

I've ordered a steering pot, so will have to do some more tests when they arrive.

The washer makes all the difference. Check this thread. I had the same problem over a year ago.

Sometimes I use a 1mm slice of a ball pen cardridge (Bic pen) to replace these washers.
When you reassemble the servo case (with the washer), and before you put it in the chassis, make sure the servo gear drives the pot. To do this turn the largest gear with the finger and check behind the pot if the axle of the pot is turning as well.

You guys are absolute legends.

The little washer (I had to use the pen tube tip) made all the difference and I now have a working mr02 that centers properly !

What got me was that the iwaver 02 that I was slowly converting all parts to kyosho, didn't have the brass washer and I didn't think much of it. How wrong was I.

Thanks heaps for all your help.

Cheers,
Pheno

thanks to fovea3d for that absolutely cool radical tip...
