What do you think of my track layout? Pls comment

Hi!

I'm planning on my new track and I've attached an image of a layout that I think would work. My kids like to have the green grassy area so I guess I have to do it

Anyhow, the surface will be foam tiles and total track size will be 18.5'x8.5' with 6sqft unusable because the fireplace is in the way

Lane widths will be 30" on the straightaway and high-speed sweeper and 24" elsewhere.

As for outside barriers, I'll adopt BobT's idea on another post which I think is real clever.

Please give comments or suggestions for a different layout.

Thanks in advance.

That's a nice layout!
It scares me to make a permanent or semi-permanent design though... I like change alot
I use garden hose for borders. Simple, cheap, and effective. The F1 cars tend to stick under the hose in some cases, but the rest bounce off, scrubbing a bit of speed in the process.

Thanks jeepinator.

I was hoping I could make this semi-permanent. The outside barriers are definitely removable and the infields will be cut to shape from outdoor carpet (green stuff) and will be confined in the 2x2 foam tiles so I can still take the track apart and stack 'em up. To make it stick to the foam tiles, I was planning to shave off about 1/8" to 1/4" along the edges of the carpet and use black or white (if I find one) hockey tape to stick the edges to the track.

I still don't have any solutions yet as to how to effectively use the drywall edging as infield barriers. Still working on it

I live in Derry.

Yeah Pro-Z, I had email exchanges with Bob recently and will try to come up one of these days. I got bone stock F1's though but Bob told me that at least 2 or 3 can go stock F1's if needed.

Hope to see you sometime soon and race with you (wait .... what am I saying, you're Pro-Z, I can't race ya )

Talking

I re-did the layout last night and this is what I came up with. It uses more of the track space than the first one.

This was a result of my search in this forum and just combined different ideas to suit the track space I have.

Francis,

I like both your designs. All the turns are a little different. That's important to keep it interesting.

Instead of carpet why not use green felt? Its cheaper, easier to cut and there will be less transition of height. On the other hand if you use the carpet you will not need as many lane barriers.

For the few lane barriers you may need just use old garden hose. Nails driven through the hose can keep them in place an still allow changes in the layout.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'd start collecting the materials this week and hopefully finish the entire track over the weekend. Cutting the carpet is the killer

Thanks for the suggestions BobT. Green Felt would be a good alternative and I'll head out to Walmart or a Hobby Shop to check 'em out. But as you mentioned, I would like to keep the infield barriers to a minimum thus the green carpet. I saw one at Home Depot but it was the darker green-colored variety. The transition could've been nice as it's thinner than the light green outdoor carpet.

Right now, my family runs off of 3 NiMH only to slow the F1's down and it's plenty quick for this size track. We'll switch to 4 batteries but put a bumper behind the trigger to limit travel and speed. Of course, my controller will have less or no bumper (cheater!)

If I end up using the carpet, garden hose as barrier would be perfect as the F1's would've slowed down enough before it hits.

PS. Thanks for the very informative response you sent to my email

Could you elaborate on your 3-battery trick? Do you just stick a metal rod in to substitute a battery? I ask this because I need to slow my, and my buddies' Overlands to better suit our rather small track.

Sure. I found brass tubing at my LHS that was the same outside diameter as a AAA cell and cut it to the same length as the cell.

I wrapped some 18 guage wire around the spring contact of the right upper battery position, threaded it through the dummy brass cell. The front contact plate on the right side slides out. I stripped the end of the wire and put it behind the slid out plate. I then replaced the plate with the wire stuck behind it.

That part can be trickey but you'll get it.

The brass tube can be replaced with anything that will hold the place of the missing cell. I thought of using wood dowel but I did not have any the right size.

Hope this helps.

What's the point of the dowel? Is it to keep the other battery from dislodging itself? Or does it serve some other purpose?

Thanks for the help.

Yes the dowel, or in my case the brass tube, just keep the other cell in place.
