F1 Servo Issues

Hey guys --- been a while since I posted but my brother has to constantly change his servo trim setting back and forth 6 or 7 ticks as it seems to be catching or skipping or ?

I'm going to pop the cover and see if there is a broken tooth somewhere or some tire or rcp debris stuck in there.

Any thoughts on what to look for ? and do the metal 4th gear from kyo for the MR03's work in these for added strength ?

Thanks ----- hopefully experts will chime in like EMU, Mike etc.

F1 uses mr02 servo gears. Swap in another set. Give the rear a light fine grit sanding to remove any excess flashing that can rub between gears.

Give the pot a little clean behind the shield. When you reinstall the pot, a tiny fab of shoe goo or medium CA to hold it in place of it moves.

Check for any bind between the knuckle and tie rod. Ensure that the knuckles don't hang up when rebounding.

Many steering issues on the f1 cars actually come from the rear of the car too. Lateral play in the side plates or a slipping differential are the two major culprits there. It can feel like the trim goes off center of the rear pod shifts. If using side plates, I typically remove the rear most pair of screws to lengthen the effect of the side plates. Replacing the rear most set of screws with a knuckle axle, cut down... it should be looking enough to keep the side plate in position but not drag on the track.

I drill out the small plastic post near the front screw hole, and use a second screw there. It sounds a little complicated, but isn't... I can post some picture when I get home.

The standard f1 differential does not have keyed diff rings, and often slips on the right rear wheel. The rings should be glued to the half drives with a little thin CA. This will keep the car straight when applying throttle or hitting the brakes. Use as many balls as you can fit in the spur gear.

Thanks EMU ! We are using kyosho F1 ball diffs ti shaft and ceramic balls. Pn motor moind and kyosho cf side plates.

I was able to clean out the marka/rcp pieces in the gears and it eliminated the notchy feeling.

They are so touchy though - some days they feel great then others........

Try to cover any holes that go into the servo... I use a little scotch tape on cars that I don't have barge boards installed.

Light shaft is necessary. Glueing the plates is also necessary with Kyosho diffs.

Any disc damper? Side springs? Without an adjustment collar, or an easy way to adjust tweak on the side springs, I removed the side springs on all of my cars. Just using a disc damper and top shock.

Juat saw your reply EMU - we have red springs and rhe kyosho disc damper, no top shock.

I forgot about gluing the plates - we have 6 total cars runingbthe same differential setup. They mostly run great so wondering about how much the gluing will help?

Its amazing how touchy the f1s can be right?

They can be a little touchy, but using an atomic differential or glueing the side plates in the Kyosho solved a lot of issues that I was having initially. The atomic isn't as smooth, but the rings are D cut, so don't slip. The Kyosho rings are harder and flatter, so less prep work outside of glueing in position. A little sticky grease can take the place of glue if you are afraid of glueing.

If using a PN spur, run all the balls. Slow motor, use ceramic, modified steel. The PN spur you may need to cut down the lip a little.

Try pulling the side springs for a run. See if the issue persists. If so, put a drop of comm drops on the pot... that usually cleans it enough. Check for any debris on the teeth of the servo gear, and see if any wiring is crushed or fraying.

All of my f1 cars minus one are in pieces right now. Haven't driven them in years, nowhere to run. Once the base setup is done, it's usually all tires...

Check that the body is not hitting any part of the motor mount (issue with some bodies and the PN mount behind where the side clips holds) or the damper. You may need to shave some body material if it touches.
