it would not be easy to change to MM. you would have to find a conversion H plate. the shop here may still have them though. the MM motor pod debuted with the MR-02 and the H plate design is different form the MR-01. initially, we had to make our own conversion plates and called it the MR-015, which kyosho subsequently released themselves allowing you to take the narrow MR-01 platform and use the new rear end configurations provided by the MR-02. the kyosho MR-015 also included the valued servo saver function that the MR-01 lacked which is mostly why the MR-01 was left to history.
servo saver just addressed a fault in the MR-01 design in which servo gears and tie rods were much more susceptible to breakage. it was a significant design improvement within the line however it does not mean the MR-01 is useless. just means it's prudent to have extra servo gears on hand.
You might want to consider a used mr02. Parts may be easier to find compared to the mr01. However you will have to get a body that is mr02 specific. Eventually Kyosho came out with a mr03 which is a one chassis fits all bodies platform. Ultimately, if you're serious you might want to get a mr03 or go to a shop or track and see how they perform. Hope this helps.
