I have been racing 1:10 for some years, but I have so little space at home, so mini-z is my friend. I have always been scale-nerd, more than a tuning nerd, therefore I want to ask you a question.
Has anybody tried to make a mini-z run on only three AAA cells (removing one cell, and wiring directly between the adjacent cells instead)?
Will the electronics be able to get enough power?
Some of the really great 1:10 modified racing guys, always enjoyed racing with stock motors too, because the were always neck by neck, lap after lap, it looked more realistic, and just as fun.
I hope somebody can give me some serious answers for my project.
There are guys on your side of the pond that run a scale f1 series. They run x speed motors to get a lttle more speed. One of the guys is semi active on the forum, and never mentioned any electronic problems.
Something else you may consider is just sticking with the stock motor, and limit the gearing. Havig a stock motor on stock gearing is pretty slow even with four cells.
If you want to be able to use aftermarket motor pods you could look into the pn 80t motors. Limiting the gearing would keep them very close in performance and easily manageable.
We've run Mini-Z and d'NaNo for parties and school programs. The cars are far too fast in stock form, so we use throttle limiters to de-tune. It's a simple nylon thumb screw and brass receiving bolt lodged in the area that the trigger moves forward in. The throttle thumb control will hit the screw and limit travel. twist screw in or out to setup the exact speed. Elegant, simple and cheap. Better drivers can be rewarded with more speed or you can handicap too, simply by adjusting the thumb screw.
It's a bit of work to drill out the area where the brass nut goes to hold the screw, but still only a 15 min job at most.
I much prefer these "old-school" limiters to digital limiters, unless you have a high-end radio. Done this on all the stock "KT" series of radios. - Lorne
greetings njesper...
it's been done in japan on f-1 mini-z's mia f-1 site
i think i've seen a 3 cell done before on a mr01 waay back... but not sure...
anyway, you can take any of the suggestions above to de-tune or slow down the speed...
to summarize..
- keep it stock (as suggested by haco) the stock motor is pretty good, and you will have long run times with the smallest pinion - 6t
- if you have a 2.4 ghz mini-z you can try experiment with the training mode (as hrdrvr suggested)
- have a throttle limiter (suggested by lornecherry)
pretty recently kyosho came out with a ''tiki-tiki'' (chase mode) mr03 version
basically it limits the speed to about 70% and allows a handicapping system by determining how many ''turbo boosts'' each driver can have. the thing is, you will have to purchase a 3-channel radio in order for you to use this feature.

I like the idea of a de-tuned car. I have heard of people building their own motors that are 100+ turns. These should slow the cars down considerably. I have also heard about people installing a resistor into the stock motor wires to limit the current and thus the speed. I hope this helps.
