I've done some research; the PureTen Alpha 2 is shaft-driven; and laid out a lot like a TC3. For whatever reason, it's 200mm wide instead of 190mm. So that means no MazdaSpeed 6 body for me, I'll have to settle for a 200mm Mazda 6. Also, the PTA2's were availible as a rally or street car. I'm pretty sure the one I bought is in street mode. I found some 6-year-old forum archives that showed how-to's on what HPI shocks to use and where to cut the chassis to allow for a lot more ground clearance. This thing is gonna be fun.

I was searching around on eb@y for parts and stuff. Check out this Kyosho touring chassis: dual carbon fiber side plate chassis, single belt drive, battery down the middle, angled servo a la off-road trucks/buggies. VERY cool chassis.

It came Thursday while we were racing. Pics will follow, but here's the run down:
Gear diffs
Bushings throughout
200mm body/chassis
Body isn't pre-cut, but the wheel circles are cut - bonus!
Solid plate chassis - buggy style
Plastic shocks, no oil - bouncy
Kyosho X-Speed motor, looks like it has an internal fan like a 550 truck motor
1400mAH NiCD battery included
Crazy ground clearance; over an inch!
Rally blocked tires
All KO Propo electronics - in white in white cases
Fixed camber/toe, although a few shock mount choices
Dogbones front and rear; no CV's, although there are some availible I think
Inner dust cover not included
The chassis is solid as a rock, and the huge buggy-bumper in the front will hopefully protect the front arms/shocks from damage. I'm going to decal it up and run it as it sits. This isn't a competitive touring racer by any means. For $75, it's a perfect rally basher though.

It looks good! I might have to pick up a 1/10 as I think they're trying to start the vintage Trans Am races here. I was looking at a used cyclone S or maybe a TC4, or basically something pretty cheap used that might keep up. T
his looks like a nice kit, but theres no local shops that carry parts for Kyosho, at least I don't think

Nope Hank, nobody really carries Kyosho anymore. Since Kyosho America came on the scene and took their products OUT of hobby stores so you have to order from Kyosho directly. I'm hoping no to break anything on this car; since I'm not going to be racing single-turn mod motors like I did with my TC4's.

Pics of the body will follow later. I hate Kyosho decals.
26mm touring wheel/tire for reference. That's about a 20mm ride height, compared to the 5-6mm height I ran on my FTTC4.
All touring cars need this much flex!
Nothing is adjustable. The steering links have such a huge downward angle, this thing is made for off-road.
That's the biggest pinion gear I've ever had. The car came with a 80T spur as a spare. I'm not sure what the pinion/spur installed is.
The blue plastic looks pretty cool in the pics, but it might as well be black in real life. The shocks are incredible bouncy. I might have to get some oil shocks to calm it down. I still haven't run it yet; gotta switch to Dean's plugs first. I'm going to use my Airtronics radio for it.

Windows tinted, switched to Dean's, set-up radio, and drove around. This thing is awful loud, the dogbones rattle a lot. Plus the tires aren't glued and there's no brakes; but who needs brakes on a rally car anyways?
But one nice surpise is the metal bushings instead of plastic. I was going to replace them with bearings, but they're metal instead of plastic, so I'll leave 'em. I'm used to Tamiya plastic bushings that wear out really fast.

This thing is damn fast for a RTR! I thought the huge 32/78 pinion/spur would hurt the torque, but give it a high top speed. Wrong, this motor has all the torque in the world, and the gear ratio gives it a very high top speed for an RTR. It actually handles on road pretty well. Nothing like my FTTC4 set up on foam tires, but a lot better than any of my old Tamiya's.
I can't wait to get it out on the ball field Thursday night.

Always check the screws on a new RTR! I ran mine around the other day, then I was cleaning it up to put it away. One of the two lower steering rack screws is gone. Musta come loose when I was jumping the sidewalk in my yard.

After running it on dirt, I need oil shocks and an inner dust cover badly! I replaced the stock servo with a HiTec unit and glued the stock servo saver together and am using a Kimborough servo saver instead. Steering response is much more direct and smooth.
I also put the droop screws in the A-arms so I can lower the car for on-road racing, although dirt is where it's at.
