I figure we might as well start a thread on this...rather popular I guess...
I had my first go at body chopping today. Found a POS mustang model with no parts to go with it, so I wouldn't be upset if it didn't turn out ok. I wish it had the other parts though, it's looking to be kinda cool.
Mondo, I hope you don't mind me chopping your pic.
Let me know if it bugs you. How's it looking by the way? can you show an "in progress" pic? (On your thread, of course)
I don't mind the altered look of a chop but some purists will disagree. To each his own.
what do you guys use to stick the body back together?? I would have used JB weld, but didn't have any around, so I just stuck it together with superglue for now. Any suggestions?? I'm a use what I have around the house kinda guy, don't like making 20 runs to the store
On my first two bodies I used CA. I guess it holds alright. It's good if you're impatient, especially if you're using the CA accelerator too. I forget the name of what I use now. When I get home I'll post it, but it works well. It's like a plastic welding gel stronger than normal model glue but that's stuff is good too.
It just takes time to let it cure. Snuggly clamp your parts together if you can. Snug, not tight.
And be sure to glue plastic strips over your seams from the inside to reinforce the joints. (dejavu)
Converting a model kit to a Mini-Z is different than just building the kit for display. Glue plastic to plastic, not paint to paint, and not paint to chrome, etc. So scrape your glueing surfaces down to the plastic and glue the full surface. Don't just tack things in place. (dejavu again)
I actually wish I had gotten a better model now...This is turning out pretty good, but I have nothing but what is in the pictures....Grrrr..... Oh well...
I use an old type of plastic welding cement. Maybe testors or zenax? It is a real thin liquid that actually melts the plastic together. Use this for but joints and underbody re-enforcement strips.
I then take a superglue gap filling variety and go around the re-enforcement strips, zap with accelerator and move on. This allows the joint to be welded together and held in place with the superglue.
For the side body mounts, I found some "sticks on contact" at the wal-mart hardware section. This dries hard but remains flexible. It eats into the plastic a bit, so do not over do it.
Like your ´stang. One of my buds drove one way back when.
