Overland Obstacle Course

Howdy,

I got a couple of Mini-Z Overlands recently and after running around the RCP track and hitting a few jumps, I decided to build an obstacle course to be placed on the RCP track. After thinking a bit I wanted it to be used as a stand alone obstacle as well.

Using some foam from around the shop I got the basic size cut out. 48 inches long and 32 inches with to fit in between the RCP rails plus started to build some elevation and obstacles.

Closer shot of the beginnings of an path. Originally, I wanted something to place on the RCP track during an Overland race to simulate more off-road conditions and began to make front to back paths that would be challenging but still move the race forward.

Obstacle Course 2

Moving along with the foam forming.

BTW, this is mostly Formular 250 insulation foam but I did have some odd Styrofoam around too.

I am using a Stanley Razor Knife for removing big chunks and a Micro Plane Razor Plane to shape and fine tune.

Adding more elevation and features. Now we have the Matterhorn!

The best part! Testing the course to determine difficulty and drivability.

Obstacle Course 3

FYI, I am using a Low Temp glue gun to stick the various foam parts together.

More testing. You can see that the features are unfinished. I am driving the course to determine where material needs to be added or removed.

On the left side, in front the car you can see an attempt to use individual styrofoam balls as rocks. I mixed some carpenter's glue and water to harden the surface. Worked OK but I will probably use real rocks in the end.

Most of the main obstacles are in this shot. Now for the fine tuning.

Another testing shot.

Overland Obstacle Course 4

The project is coming along.

Most of the main shaping is done. I left it rough on purpose because I want texture anyway. At t his point I am using ALEX PLUS caulk to fill in spots and add minor changes to how the course flows. I did several coats in some spots.

Overland Obstacle Course 5

On to the finishing prep.

OK, time to seal it up and give the surface some toughness and durability. I am using some Elastomeric paint from Benjamin Moore. Very stretchy, can be built up in thickness and fills gaps and holes well. I am using several coats.

In this photo you should be able to see what looks like tire tracks. I am working these in with the thick paint as a base for finishing the piece off later.

Overland Obstacle Course 6

Yeah! More testing! If I wanted this to look like the Arctic, or like Wisconsin after the 2 feet of snow we just got, I'd quit now!

Traction testing.
BTW, there are now about 4 coats of the Elastomeric paint on the whole thing and it is building up nicely with a very durable surface.

Clearance testing.

Balancing on the rails.

That's amazing!! Very well built.

I had a go on a very detailed and large one in Germany last month. It had bridges and allsorts. They used a lot of flock and old twigs and stuff to add to the realism.

Think you'll do anything like that?

Got some more work done on the obstacle course. I had an open house at my track on Friday and used it to show and demonstrate Overlands.

I thought about detailing it even more but this piece is both a proof of concept for a larger layout testing techniques etc and an obstacle meant to be used on an RCP track during Overland races so it seemed that it didn't pay to go too nuts. I'm saving that for the big version!

So, this one is 33 inches wide and 48 inches long. I am thinking of making a larger 4 foot x 8 foot layout or so.

Detail shot.

Detail shot.

Over view.

The demo set up at the Mini Speedway open house.
