For painted on lights such as the brake lights on the back of the NSX, I lay down a silver base then a clear overlay on top of that. It's not as nice as candy over chrome but looks a bit more lively than a flat color. When using clear Tamiya colors, you also can increase the saturation of the color by applying additional cots. Red for example will darken really quickly with successive coats.
