i've turned a PS into a basic 12v, 5v, 3v, power station but i've never modified anything to be variable or with a readout. anyone have experience with this? sounds like the perfect match for a tire truer where the sweet spot is more than 5v but less than 12v. i'v not been able to find a plug in power supply that is 7v+/- and supports the amp draw of a tire truer.
I would think that a simple 12V rheostat would work quite well when wired into the line out voltage. it should work like a volume or temperature control. Add a digital voltmeter to that and you should be home free. Essentially that is what a Motormaster does. There are several varieties of fan control switches for Automotive use. Three, four and infinite speeds available. Variable resistors. To package it all might make it less than portable though.
