I've considered it and even have a box of appropriate cells.

The big problem is charging. I don't want to have to come up with a 6 to 10 unit "charging rack". It would also have to discharge them first to keep the batteries good as long as possible. This would also increase the price of the system considerably.

For years, everyone with the rechargeable AMB systems complained about having to charge them and the expense and hassle of replacing the batteries when they go flat or one goes dead during a race.

If a the battery were to go down during a race, no laps get counted. If it is powered by the car's battery through the BEC, it will work as long as the car can move.

There is also the issue of extra weight and its distribution on small cars like the mini-z.

I like the idea that it is a plug in transponder but some racers for 10th scale do not like that since it drains power, How much are the battery for them?

Then they should embrace the lack of a battery in the transponder.

I don't remember all the formulas, but I can confidently say that the less than 10 ma (10 ma x 5v = 1/20th of a watt) drawn by the transponder is only a fraction of the power required to accelerate the extra ounce or so along with the vehicle.

I don't think I am interested in supplying batteries, but if they really wanted to go that route, a 4 cell nimh pack around 120 mah should be available online for under $15. A small receiver pack with a female lead will plug directly into the transponder.
