Charging NiMH batteries. What charger is safe for it?

I'm currently using rechargable alkaline batteries and to tell you the truth THEY SUCK. I'm thinking of purchasing NiMH batteries but I don't know what chargers will work with them. I have a quick charger for my 1/10 batteries. It's a 15min charger. Could I use that with AAA NiMH batteries? I have an old BOSSMAN charger that I used with NiCADs. Could I use it with NiMH batteries? How do I determine how long to charge them?

Charging

i-WERKS,

I use Enenrgizer ACCU 700mAh NiMh batteries.

Do NOT charge NiMh batteries with a NiCd charger.. You need a charger especially designed for NiMh.

I have an Energizer 'Fast' charger forNiMh. It takes 5 hours to charge, so I ahve zero idea where the 'fast' comes into play

I am sure some other Members can make recomendations.

I just bought a 1 hour Rayovac charger that has a button to switch between NIHM or NICD. I am using Energizer NIHM and it is so fast. The batteries are giving me a run time of 50 to 60 minutes too. The charger was $30 at Walmart.

Mondo... it's because you Britts have double-voltage half-amperage power... lol.. actually, 5 hours is "fast" for most NiMH chargers.

The Rayovac Renewal chargers are the cheapest and easiest to get. My Renewal charger charges 4 AAA 750mah cells in 20 hours but it was free. I intend to eventually get the new 1 hour NiMH charger which is $30 from Wallgreens and Eckards (and a little more elsewhere like CompUSA)

If you get one of the Renewal battery chargers, make sure it states on the back by the plug that it WILL handle NiMH cells!!!

From your message, you are using rechargable alkalines, if you have the swing top Renewal charger that should be ok.

Jeff

From my understanding, the Rayovac renewal is similar to Pure Energy rechargable alkalines. It has a cover and it charges 2 or 4 AA or AAA batteries. The whole unit plugs into the wall. I purchased them for $30 cdn and it included 12 AA and 4AAA. These chargers look very cheap.

Chargers..

Jeff,

Does that Rayovac charger support dual voltage, i.e. 100~240VAC? If so, I have to get one. That damned Energizer Prozac charger frustrates the crap out of me..

10 hours work for two hours of fun? It's like a convent girl..

I am not sure if it does or not. Here is a link to info and pics of the charger. It charges AAA in about 45-50 minutes. I get about 50 minutes of run time so with 2 sets of batteries, I am never at the track waiting.

Rayovac PS4 1hr, has a 12V 1.5A output on a seperate AC adapter, so using a different adapter is easy for 110 or 220 or Cigarette lighter (car power), or even a 12v solar panel!

I-WERKS:

Where did you get the charger and batteries from? I'm looking for rechargables and those sound like a good deal.

Thanx

i got it @ walmart Markville mall. I don't think they carry them anymore. Only markville had them. It only charges for about 7 time before they start loosing their capacity. I guess thats why no one buys them . I've bought the batteries about about 3 times since they cost about $1-2 more than ordinary batteries and come fully charged from the pack. But I'm going to go with NiMH batteries. I've just won the auction.

I have a pair of the Rayovac 1 hour and about 10 or so sets of NiMH, it's great, I can charge up all of my batteries that day, then race all night and recharge the used cells while I'm racing!

Thanks for the info. I'm around that area a lot, so I'll pop in and see what else they have. Adding bateries and charger to my list of things to buy this weekend!

Thanks again.

flat 4.8v and 6v batterypacks

has anyone tried using the 4.8v or 6v batterypacks you buy
with tyco r/c cars or at radio shack?
wondering if they offer any improvements in power
output...as in parallel to ni-cds giving more power than
ni-mhs supposedly...
i couldn't find any technical info on the current flow etc.
anywhere.....not that i would've completely understood
the specs anyway hehe

If u guys are looking for an "extremely-fast" charger, i recommend u buying one of those charger for the 1/10 scale that have current adj. charging and its recommended for using with nimh batteries as well.
These charger can charge your batteries in as fast as 30 min or even faster, it depends on how you set your current.
But the downside is that they are very expensive normally around the US$100 ++++ But if u own a 1/10 scale car then its worth it or ask someone who races a 1/10 scale car, I'm sure most of them have one of these top of line charges.
