overheating AWD?

hey folks,
after just a few minutes of running, I'm noticing my MA-010 motor (the stock kit one) gets REALLY hot. I know it's got some extra weight to pull, but it's really burning up!

I'm currently using it as a drift car, so I have the kyosho drift tires on it. I bought this car as the AWD chassis kit (since I already had a radio), and so I can see that it only has ball bearings on the differentials.

Just wondering what are the best upgrades and/or improvements I can do to this car to keep it from heating up so quickly? I run on carpet, rcp, linoleum... whatever's available!

My first guess is ... ball bearings, right?

PN Racing has a new motor cover and heat sink. The AWD motor gets very hot. I put one on my modified car that I race on a 40' RCP track and it made a big difference. I actualy warped the plastic one in an 8 min main on a hot day. When I pull of the track now, the motor cover is hot, but the motor seems alot cooler.

Bearings won't help keep the motor cool. It's tucked up inside the car, the heat sink is the only way to go.

dugrant153,

I have purchased a kit in the past, but remembered there were kyosho bearings included in the kit. Is there a version that has no bearings?

Anyway, for lowering the heat problem, I'd say bearings are the first to get. And make absolutely sure the motor is paired with the right motor spacer, and check to make sure there is no binding on any moving drive train.

Here will be a short list that could help with heat/drive train issue:

Bearings
Motor Al spacer (kyosho, PN, Atomic, 3 racing)
Motor Al cooler/cover (PN air scoop(needs work but best), 3 racing(no work))
Kyosho Ti center shaft
(strongly recommend getting the PN orange center shaft retaining pieces to go with that, way more durable and make it stronger)
Atomic Ti drive shaft(or Al drive shaft)
Plastic rims
Al pinion, delrin spur gears

i drilled some holes and made a ghetto scoop. works fairly and bring down the temp a little. I only uses the awd to drift as well.

I'd recommend the motor heat sink. One thing to remember is when racing the motor does heat up but there is also more air moving under the car than when drifiting. You are also turning the motor at higher RPMs when drifting.

Heat is a fact of the awd life. Some say upgraded FETs help as well as upgrading the motor to an open end can.

I was a bad stock motor. It was only 2 months old and started overheating. I replaced it and have had no problems since. The hop ups weren't a factor.

I think I'll try replacing the stock motor. it heats up waaaay too quickly.
plus, I notice that there is a bit of 'skipping'. it'll rev up to a certain rpm, then jump to the higher rpm...

try a different gear ratio and a PN heatsink, it made a world of a difference for my motor (alloy heatsink)

Sorry, I gutted all the good parts from the chassis, then tossed it and the motor. I run in the HFAY races, so I replaced it with a stock motor. I have a modified motor that works fine in it also. I don't get to run it much.
