While not as experienced as some here, our group has used both sides of the RCP track. Once cars were set up for the surface, Lap times were VERY similar.

It will be interesting to see. I know Brian's group switched to smooth some time ago and didn't find any big difference, so they switched back.

Let's have you mention if you are running smooth or rough surface. And we can track it. I know the track only tells part of the story. Your car will make a good amount of difference, but the one holding the controller will make the biggest difference.

PDX Mini Z - rough
SLCity Mini Z - rough
Tri Cities - rough
Central Florida - rough

Kyosho Mini Z's of Georgia - smooth
Malibu Mini Z - smooth
1/28 RaceWay - smooth
SouthEastern Ohio (SEOZ) - smooth

I know you presently aren't doing HFAY, but it would be good to get your input.
Washington DC - update: tried both, switched back to rough
Burncity Mini Z -

We will be able to see what everyone is driving after this first months races are posted... hopefully this weekend. Not pressuring anyone for times, we will get them when we get them, that's just a target. And if you see someone that is racing similar cars, on similar track, you can reach out to them for set up info.

As a club waiting in the wings to rejoin, we took part in the experiment to use smooth side with Brian and also switched back to rough. This being said, I am not opposed myself to letting the club decide what they want to use and simply tracking it as a field in the submission results as it is a relevant bit of data to the results.

There was a time when the results tracked auto scale even. Ideally it would be great if drivers could create a profile on the club section of the page (register to HFAY and be assigned/affiliated with a club) to input their car configuration should someone decide they are curious as to what a person is driving however that’s far above simply collecting race times and lap counts and do not want to make submission of results overly burdensome. I know, i’m A frequent late results submitter myself... i’ve Never met a driver that wouldn’t share their car setup for HFAY.

There are a few things up our sleeve with the website that will be the cool factor you and a number of us are looking for... ie profiles, car set up, autoscale, club registration, data uploading..... things are in the works. keep the ideas coming. Can't do everything, but we can pool the ideas.

One comment I can make about the tracks in general. I have raced with several clubs over the years from coast to coast. I have noticed that the tracks do react to humidity. when racing in California at Kenon years ago their track had so much traction it was unreal. I don't know that I've ever experienced that kind of traction before or since. Maybe that is whey some places like the smooth side, it gives them a better balance.

In Utah it's pretty dry and I have notice that when we race on days that is rains or snows (high Humidity) we always have better traction as well.

I have for years taken a water spayer bottle and spayed down my track with water several hours before racing and it does improve traction, once the track surface is dry

I think the track surface should be left to the club for whatever works best for them, smooth or rough.

Central Florida Mini-Z Racers use the rough side.

Adding a) fastest lap time for each driver, b) body used and c) chassis used on the results page would be great. Also smooth or rough next to the club name for each month.

In discussion at Malibu Mini-Z: will probably start posting 3 side by side pictures of all cars from each event, one with bodies on and Tx behind each car, one each form top and bottom of chassis. Perhaps a cool thing to do for each club on a voluntary basis in addition to any other shared set up info.

Hey guys I am Mike with the Southeast Ohio group. Our club will be listed on the race results as SEOZ. I had not been able to create an account here for some reason and had been communicating with Ty and Brian via email, but 4th time trying worked 👍.
Our group of 5 are all family members for now but we have been trying to recruit a few more. Me, my wife and 2 sons (10 and 5, youngest is not included in results submitted) got the mini-z setup for christmas and shortly after that 2 other family members ordered their cars. We have the 2 wide L tracks setup in my basement with an easylap system and have ran all laps on the smooth side.

We are excited to be a part of the HFAY season and happy to have found mini-z racing after a few years of running 1/10 and 1/8 scale cars/trucks.

I think it would be very cool to see fastest lap times in the results. I have been wondering how our fastest times stack up against the faster guys here. Although for me so far (track 5 and track 8) my fastest times, practice and race, were very similar track 5 was 4.4 and track 8 so far is 4.3. I can't remember to the thousandths, my memory is not that good.

Some setup information would be useful. For us, probably like most new groups, sifting through the years of information to figure out the best setups is a little daunting and gets a little expensive. When I buy a new part I buy 3 parts because I do not want to upgrade my car without upgrading my wife's and son's. Seeing setup information for some of the faster racers would be helpful in deciding which parts to try out.

Our upgrades so far have been tires, t plates, front springs, 70t motors with 7t pinion, and more recently mm2 motor mounts. 4 of the cars in our group are MM cars and one is an LM. I have driven the LM car and really like it. It seems to handle almost perfect with just a tire and t plate upgrade.

For the person submitting information getting everybody's car setup would be a bit daunting. Maybe when a club is registered a club admin can be created who can then create user accounts for the other group members. Those users could then be responsible for entering their own car setup information and keeping it updated.

My wish list would be to be able to overlay line graph similar to what zround does illustrating where everyone falls in relation to all others. That is far more challenging given the various systems used.

I’m happy to share my car info. It hasn’t changed in years. I believe you don’t have to spend a lot to be competitive. For some, I inate skill more than makes up for inexpensive options.

Hey Mike, Glad you were able to get registered with the site. Welcome aboard.

Regarding setup, you are really about there. I am such a simpleton and have only done just what you have and am now in the high 80's and low 90's regularly. For our club, we want them to get good with what they start with before making too many changes... but we don't stop them from making changes as that's part of the fun. Drive it, brake it, rebuild it, race it... or upgrade it. Like Arch2b said, he hasn't changed his setup for years, and i know others the same way. Once you get to a certain skill, you won't change the cars much.

At this point, it may simply be what tires, tplate, and move to the 8 tooth PN gear. it runs smoother, and 8 tooth gives you just a bit more speed while still good pep around corners. If you are still using the plastic motor mounts, then leave the #7 puck with the 8 tooth pinion.

Results for both Race #1 (clockwise) and Race #2 (counter clockwise) are submitted.

Looking forward to see how everyone else did as well!

Our drivers really preferred running the track clockwise to counter clockwise.

We're looking forward to track #8 and the February races.

Welcome Mike! Really excited about the new groups getting involved. Its cool to see Mini-Zs on the rise!

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to reply about the surface of the track our group runs on. I am apart of the Mini-Z's of Ga group and we are using the smooth side of the RCP track.

I'm excited to see so many new HFAY participants!

I also would love to see body used and fastest lap in the data. I know now that our fastest lap was off the pace of Ohio at least. We were more in the 4.9 territory. Also it shows consistency. Fastest lap isn't that important if you can't string some together. Average lap time is way more important, and that is where I struggle (fastest lap would still be a lot of fun to see, however). I am not opposed to more setup data, but that gets to be a bit of a hassle unless it is very basic. For example, what if I change tires or springs between races? Documenting that for every racer might get a bit out of hand. Maybe a basic profile that says the general gear. It would be a bit embarrassing for me, because I love modding my car, so there would be people way faster than me with much less expensive stock mini zs.

I think any settings data would need to be by drivers as unreasonable for one person to capture that for everyone. I’ve had days where we had 10+ drivers which is a task in itself to manage.

I also agree that fastest lap is in large part irrelevant. It’s meaningless unless they can be strung together in a consistent manner and win.

We also had drivers that only ran clockwise. Some people just don’t like counterclockwise and not everyone is participating for solely points.

My goal was to hit 100 laps in each race. The top guys in our club did this and I was happy to get into that threshold. It didn’t happen very often but felt nice when I did.
