Advance Timing Question?

Hi guys,

A bit of a tricky one here, so I need to ask one of the experienced fellows. Maybe NML or BJS-TF or Drac or the like can give me some guidance...

I recently tried advancing the timing on one of my arms. It's actually pretty easy to do. I just removed the windings and found that the comm assembly is located on the iron cores by means of three pegs. I carefully cut off half of each peg so that I could rotate the comm in relation to the cores, then superglued it back on. I didn't get the RPM boost I was hoping for though and that started me thinking...

Please take a look at the attached pic. Notice that when looking at it from the comm end (as shown in the pic), the comm has been rotated CCW in relation to the core. Now since these motors spin CCW going forward (with respect to the comm end of course; and CW viewed from the pinion end), this means that the two portions of the comm contacting the brushes are actually leading the section of the core that they are making an electromagnet. This would imply that they begin building the magnetic field sooner, or that the core is further away in its rotation from the two permanent magnets, and this confuses me.

Is the way I've advanced this correct, or do you want the core portion to be leading the two comm sections that are making it an electromagnet? How about the amount of advance I've given it? Does that look about right? Please enlighten me, and TIA for any advice,

CCW spin, CW advance

I did a 30 turn, 30 gauge, double wind with about 18 degrees comm advance. It got really warm, so I didn't test with it too much. It should have been a 40 turn with stronger magnets.

The motor spins CCW looking at the pinion side, so advancing it is CW (pinion side). Advance anywhere from 15 to 20.

A strong advance like that CAN (that saying it WILL) but it can back fire... and slow the motor down... it can pull it back the way it came with some magnets...

bascily its probly not that big of a deal to advance these tiny motors... and the degree needed would be almost unoticeable. The brush is almost as big as the com... so its already charging before the electro magnet is inline with the can magnet... the difference will be about null...

Neodymium I theorize might need to be rotated the other way... I've read palces that say neo REPELLS in some motors instead of attracts to make it spin... so a backwards advance, or retard, would help a bit, but only a fraction of a degree... Oh great now we have to make "Retarded Motors" hehehehehe... that aughta sell good

If you want to OPTIMIZE your motor. You can try to adjust the advance timing. But I've see the attached photo... Something wrong... I've attached another photo... hope can help you.
And the advance timing is not the MOST... if you found a good motor. Don't need to do so many work...
I've try to wound SWG30 with 40T and 10degree angle... so good...

I was explaining it backwards again. I was thinking end bell instead of comm

- End bell - Advance timing by turning it opposite the rotation of the motor.

- comm - Advance timing by cranking it in the same direction of the rotation of the motor.

motors for Zs should have their comm cranked clockwise to advance the timing.
