Exclamation Dogbreath Body Mounts How To

Several have asked how I mount my custom bodies.

Basically I use two methods depending on the body, both use styrene plastic for the mounts with the difference being how and where they are mounted.

System #1. THE SHOCK TOWER MOUNT
I use this system when the body is open on top and needs an interior such as the Rottweiler Rock Buggy or the Buginator. To do this system I cut a flat sheet of .040 styrene the approx width of the inside of the body and approx 1 inch longer than the measurement from the front shock to the rear shock on the chassis. Then using a straight edge and torch I heat the ends of the sheet and bend to 90 degrees so the the bends in the sheet fit over the shock towers. Now I use a drill to drill a pilot hole above each of the shock stays. Using an exacto knife I carefully cut out the hole to fit snuggly over each shock stay. When all is done it should snap down and lock over each shock stay, at this point I glue it inside the body.

System #1 Pic, mounting the Buginator

The only difference with the scratch built Rottweiler body is that I cut 4 individual mounts and after fitting them to the shock stays I glued two rails to them, one on each side. The scratch body was then built an these two rails.

System #1 Pic, mounting the Rottweiler

System #2 THE BATTERY SLOT MOUNT
I use this mounting system when using a one piece body such as the Hemi Dodge or Jeep body.
First I cut 4 pieces of .040 styrene about 1 1/2 inch long ad as wide as will fit in the battery slot ( I cut mine so that it is wide enough to fit from the slot in the tray where the stock mount fits to the side of the battery clip. This way when all four mounts are in position the body does not slide forward or back. NOTE: If you design this mount for standard plastic clips, the body will not fit on a chassis equipped with alloy clips as they are different widths ) I use a torch and straight edge to bend each mount to 90 degrees.
Now position the body over the chassis to where you want it, insert the 4 clips into the battery slots, and mark the inside of the body with a pencil at each clip (this will take you about 4 hands to do....yes it's tough but can be done!) Now remove all pieces and glue to inside of the body in postions marked. Make any final trims to ensure a good fit and you're done!

System #2 Pic, mounting a Jeep

These are only two methods for mounting custom bodies, I am sure that there are others. As with all things, practice makes perfect....the first ones I did took several tries to get it right....but then I didn't have anyone showing me the basics either.

Welcome to the OL MONSTER GARAGE!
Have fun and don't be afraid to try something new!
There are alot of bodies out there that can be used, you just have to find them and then make them work.

The sheet is "Plastruct", it comes 4 7X12 sheets for about $4.25 and should be able to find it at most Hobby Shops

If the body is really tight, there may not be much material left on the outside edge of the mounting hole when trimmed to fit the body....thats ok as long as the inside of the hole has a good lip to lock on the shock stay...be sure both holes are good and tight on the inside edge.

dbr what kind of glue do you use for the body mounts? i've tried model glue and crazy glue with unsuccessful results. i've used jb weld but it's messy and it's got some weight to it. i'm looking to mount a isuzu vehicross body from tamiya and i'd rather not use jb weld.

I do use super-glue or CA as it's called among R/Cers, the trick to getting CA to stick good is to use either very coarse sand paper or even the tip of your xacto knife to score or rough up both sufaces first. Once the piece is glued in and dried I usually go back and draw a bead of glue around the base of the whole piece again.....very rarely do I have a glue piece come apart, and we do a pretty good job of thrashing them hard!
