Since I got a new radio, I won't be needing this one anymore. I've already done all I can to make the KT-18 a decent radio. Mods below.
Reduced steering throw: the original KT-18 had way too much steering throw on the wheel so I tacked on some limiters. You'll have to compensate by tuning the EPA on the radio but the result is that the radio feels much more responsive.
Smaller steering wheel: I took off the bulky vinyl grip (that didn't even have grip) and replaced it with four PN 6deg slicks. Better grip, lighter weight, and better response from the smaller wheel. Feels nice and soft too.
Progressive steering tension mod: For the steering assembly within the radio, I replaced the linear spring with progressive rubber bands to make the overall steering feel more progressive. Multiple rubber bands included inside the radio (I looped them safely over a plastic standoff) so you can easily adjust the steering tension by adding or removing bands.
7.4V lithium-ion pack: I rewired the AAA battery tray to a 2S2P configuration, and then put in 4 AAA 300mAh lithium-ion cells (these are removeable for charging if needed). The added voltage really helps strengthen the signal and solves 99% of the issues people have had with their KT18's dropping signal, glitching, etc.
7.4V lithium-ion charger included: I use this charger for the radio's lithium-ion cells. Remember that there is only about 600mAh total in these lithium-ions so you have to charge the radio a bit more frequently to keep the voltage (and good performance) up.
