Hi all, great forum! I am exspecting my Z any day now and have a question. I would like to water dip my stock motor, as it seems the prefered method. I have searched the forum, and read many threads on it, however with the purchase I have made I don't want to ruin my motor. First- is this method THAT much better than running the motor at half voltage? If so can someone that has water dipped their motor provide step by step directions how to do it? Remember I am totally new to this- I do have allot of background in electronics. Thanks in advance!
The two things that are bad for the brushes/commutator is arcing and dust/debri. When the brushes are brand new they are not seated very well against the comm. This creates arcing when operating at full voltage. Hence, breaking in the motor at half-voltage or less. Submerging the motor in water also helps to reduce arcing and removes any brush dust during break-in.
Connect one or two cells (not submerged in water) to the motor which is suspended in a big jar of water.
It's quite simple actually, you can connect the motor with 2 batteries and dip the motor in a glass of water. Wait til the batteries are fully dumped or half dumped at least. Don't worry, it's completely safe.
