They work pretty well. Id start with the same compunds you would run on new RCP, but you may need to go a touch softer, or with a radial type. The radials get a lot more side bite on carpet, and it makes for a lot more overall grip.

I used to race on carpet, and it doesnt have quite as much grip as RCP with K or PN tires. The ATM line seems to have more silicone and a little more give. They hooked up better than all other rubbers IMO. I never rn the slicks though, just the AW groove or the straight grooves.

I ran ATM 10 AW grooves or 20 straight grooves, usually with 30 AW fronts.

do u suffer from any traction rolling on carpet track?

Not often with an MR02, but with an AWD, more so than on RCP, yes. You can beat it with set up though. I always prefered a low wide body (NSX, enzo) with wide offsets, and a soft set up with slightly harder tires. The soft set up would allow some roll, and provide grip while the harder tires would generally slide out before gripping enough to traction roll.

Your suspension needs to be uber smooth and the tires need to be fastened to the wheel as well. These are things we regularly to to combat traction rolling on RCP too.

The difference I believe is sdie bite. The fibers of the carpet offer a lot more than the RCP. This means if you get a little hop (rough suspension travel, or too much rear grip) youll almost definitly flip when the tire returns to the ground.

Droop and camber are also common ways of battling the traction roll, but I believe they gave up too much in the way of handling.

In the end if you can get set up to fix the problem a tender throttle finger will solve almost all the traction rolling problems. It generally happens when you turn into a corner and lift off throttle at the same time. This shifts the weight forward, and to the outside tire. If it grips well, you flip. If you let off of the throttle coming into the corner then power through and out, you still shift weight to the outside tires, but since you are on throttle (atleast not slowing down) the weight is held by both ouside tires, and not just the front.

I find this also netted higher corner speed on carpet, since it doesnt have as much grip as RCP when powering around the whole corner. This goes for both MR02 and AWD, IME.

I'd have to agree with hd.

ATM AW grooves last a good amount and stick well.
I used to run 20/30 or 20/20s.

I ran a few PN carpet v groove 8s, but they
disappear very very quickly...

I ran some PN radials a while back which pretty much
blew the atomic ones out of the water life and gripwise,
but a newer batch I bought a year or so later weren't
as good and the same degree didn't feel the same as
the first ones I inadvertently sold with my awd.
If you can find a good PN radial set, they are the best out.

To be safe, ATM AWs wouldn't be a bad way to go
though.

thanks so much guys for all the replies and hrdrvr thanks for the traction solution....will try out those things...

on carpet track, does the car tends to slide during fast corner or it all depends on the suspension setup?

pfcparts,
Good point about the PN tires. I havent been racing on carpet for a while, but just before we switched over to RCP PN released the carpet line. They werent consistant enough for me batch to batch, but they sure were good when you got a good one. I stuck with the ATMs and ran 30/10 or 30/20 (f/r). They are still the same if you buy a new set now as they were two years ago when I discovered them. I know PNs RCP tires are a lot moe consistant than they used to be, so maybe their carpet line would be worth checking out now.

EDIT: I was typing while you posted

It all depends on the susp and tire set up. You can get it to slide out, or you can plant it stable. I prefered a little slide, as our track had a few switch backs in it. You could net better speed through that section using a pendulum type swing with the rear end. I could gain a lot more time in that section with a loose rear end, then I would lose compensating for it around the fast sections.

actually i've bought a lot of kyosho tires for carpet track use, 20 rear slick and 30/40 slick/radial front...i've tested on a 1/18 scale carpet track but couldn't tell much how it perform as the track makes the car bounds...

for this particular race, we are only allowed to use either kyosho or atomic parts only...as far as i know, atomic tires have been long used for carpet and is a trusted brand but kyosho also design the tire for carpet rite coz RCP track is kinda new for them?

IDK what the tires are actually designed for, but the general consensus says that K tires are superior on RCP and ATM tires are on carpet. You get varying degrees of agreement though If its for an event, Id take an assortment of both If you could run PN tires, Id take some of them too. Tires will be the most important thing to get right at an unfamiliar track, so its always good to take a lot of them.
