I got advice from a model painting forum. I forget the sites name but i bet if you Google "1/24 model painting" you'd find some good steps to follow.
Good luck.

1. Pre-wash the body to remove any contaminates.
2. Use multiple light coats.
3. Hair dryer is a great tool to speed up drying.
4. You can make a good body jig from twisting up a coat hanger. Cheap, and expendable.
5. Don't get hung up on expensive paints. I've been using rattle cans for a decade with good results. Do pick a paint type best suited for the material however.
6. A sharp xacto knife is a blessing, don't be stingy with replacing the blade.
7. Mask tape is a consumable, it's not precious, don't hold back. better to use more and get the result your looking for than less and have things to take care of later like bleeds, overspray, etc. It doesn't have to be pretty, just has to work.
8. Be patient. Thing about order of operations to reduce labor and achieve best results.
There are tricks specific to polycarbonate/lexan however I've not had much experience with those materials. Likewise tips for spray cans vs. air brushing...

I agree with all Arch's points, but wanted to elaborate on this one specifically. I have used expensive, fancy paints of all different brands for Mini Z white bodies, and the best results are a regular, heavy duty rattle can like Krylon or Rustoleum. Mini Zs take a beating on the track, and I find those paints hold up noticeably better than, say, Tamiya.
Also, a rattle can tip: After your done with the main painting, you might need to do some touch-up. If you need to, you can put the nozzle of the spray can in a jar, and kind of seal around the edges a bit with a towel, and give a squirt. That way you can dip a small brush in the paint instead of spraying.

When masking, a lot of small pieces of tape work well to get the lines you want.
When cutting tape on the body, go light. Don't want to score the body and weaken it.
Always test spray the can to see how it reaches. Start spray further from body than ideal and work your way in.

Listen to Arch2b. I think he does the best painting in our club. If you look at his pictures of his cars you will see that he is very experienced.

I've been using my lexan airbrush paints and airbrush for white Mini-Z bodies for a long time now. After all paint is done give a nice clear coat. Testors wet look is best but the cheap Krylon works ok too.

Well, here it is. Remember, I’m new at this. 😃
Go easy on me with the feedback. This was the first time I ever masked and painted a car. The rear lights needed more love, patience and attention. I learned a lot this little project.

A decent first effort.
I might suggest taking time with a sanding board/file to remove some material and set the wing angle a bit better. Right now as its set it looks like (realism-wise) itd give lift.
Take your time and check your work as you go.
Enjoy.

Thanks for the kudos....its a labour of love to have something custom to look at while plodding around the RCP (as you've learnt).
stay tuned as I have 4 bodies in process:
1.trying a real chrome for the first time and I'm nervous to get the finish perfect.
2. Working my brain around led lights without a plug
3. thinking of trying to get a Lambo LP670 down to respectable weight for racing as I like the nose shape for "rail rubs"

What chrome product? If you've every seen Tested videos on YouTube, A.S. recommended airbrushing with a chrome paint pen refill (Molotow Liquid Chrome) vs. alclad or similar. I have yet to try it myself as I don't use an airbrush but the guy made professional movie props and knows a thing or two about 'making'.
