Turbo and/or XSpeed?
I'm thinking about increasing the speed of my Mini-Z (if it isn't fast enough already ). I've been reading and I see there look to be two options, the XSpeed motor and/or a turbo unit. The motor is self explanatory but I'm not so sure what the turbo does. What does it do? Does it require other modifications like adding more batteries or will it work with the standard 4aaa's. What kind of speed gains will I see from these? Will it/they wear down the batteries quicker? Sorry for so many questions. I guess I don't really need any of this stuff but the Mini-Z is so much fun!!!

Both will wear down the batteries quicker, I'd say around 15 minutes less runtime each, mabye a little less. It also has alot to do with your driving style, but you get the idea.
the X-Speed is a great all-around speed/acceleration hop-up, while the turbo is mainly for acceleration. From what I've noticed though, the turbo helps more for acceleration than the x-speed does. If you're going for higher top speeds, go for the X-speed, or if you're going for a little more acceleration, not much, but more speed in the end, I'd still go for the x-speed...if all you're looking for is acceleration, and mabye a small increase in top speed, go with the turbo. Or you could get the best of both worlds and go for both
I kind of look at it like this, for the speed/acceleration of the mini-z, there are 3 levels. the 1st level is stock. The 2nd level is adding either the X-Speed, or the turbo. The 3rd level would be adding both the X-Speed and the turbo.
Hope this helps, I'm sure I've left out some stuff, help me out guys!!

now that I think about it, 15 minutes each is kinda harsh, I'm withdrawing my statement and saying 5 - 10 minutes loss each item added.

I was just about to mention that, I think 30 minutes is rather an overestimate, in my experience it's about 10% less with the turbo on (which is maybe 6 minutes or so). I still get about an hour or so under heavy driving with the X-Speed and Turbo installed.

I'm on the same page as Russ. I would get both. Turbo does make a difference.

Hehehe, I wouldn't recommend it...it's a royal PAIN finding someone to fill a bottle that small, much less pressure test it!!

putting in a turbo will also allow you to use other motors if you get the model that offers short circuit protection... it helps protect your esc/circuitboard against damage from using higher rated motors... i would suggest using the x-speed for reliability (vs. the other motors that are out there)... unless you're a serious racer, don't invest in a turbo just yet.
