yes, another ball diff problem... and yes, I have read pretty much every post on this forum that relates or even mentions ball diffs
ok here's the problem... I have bought a Topcad ball diff, and it is now installed. However, there is a problem with the spur gear assembly. The action is very smooth, much more so than the gear diff, but there is a lot more resistance. If I turn one wheel, the other turns in the opposite direction, but it requires much more effort than with the gear diff.
Now, I examined the spur gear section, and I think I can see the problem. The plane that the spur gear assembly is in is not perpendicular to the axis of rotation. i.e. there is not a 90 degree angle between the axle and the spur gear. This means that if you rotate the diff the spur gear appears to "wobble". This prevents the spur and pinion from meshing correctly, and makes my car very loud.
In my hunt through previous posts I found this thread about ball diffs. Butler and RS172 both mention problems that sound similar to mine, but I do not understand how to go about fixing it.

Look very closely at the ball race that sits in the spur side hub, this is the key to everything. Is it sat absoultely square ?
Is the ball race the spur gear assembly? how do I go about setting this so that it is square?
My problem doesn't sound exactly the same as there are no "tight spots" as described by butler, and the action of my diff is very smooth.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated

PS. other topcad ball diffs seem to be anodised blue... whereas mine is gunmetal. I like it tho
