My Model Railroad Project in progress, N scale

Hi all, This is what I have been busy with for almost a month now. This is my N scale model railroad. I have already put a lot of work into it, even built the table, but I did not get pics of all of it. Here is what I have so far, I will updater as I continue working. Please, if you would like to know how something was done, please ask, I would be happy to explain the process to you.

Th white stuff you see is unpainted plaster over crumpled newspaper, makes very realistic landscapes.

right now I need to ballast some more of the track, and put some model buildings together. Thanks

very interesting!

as a kid, i used to collect n scale trains as well. i still have them all in storage.

i've been hunting all over for the n scale thomas the tank engine cars which seem to be impossible to find. i wanted to do an island of sodor ring around thier room along the wall, up and over the door with either mural painting as the backdrop or images glued to the wall of locations from the show.

oddly enough the british series toys are mostly sold in asia under the thomas n gauge series.

This weekend I painted and weathered the tunnel portals and plastered the mountain.

Here you can see how the plaster over the crumpled newspaper can create the rippled effect, like on a real mountain:

The white rocks are made from lightweight hydrocal poured into rubber molds and set. I need to make some more to make the mountain appear more rugged and rocky.

Here is another update, I got the rocks painted and finished up the plastering.

I also painted all of the track flat black to take off the shine of the ties and get a more weathered look.

If you put two layers of plaster on, it will be very strong, almost too strong to bend. I put mostly one layer on, but had 2 layers on parts that needed it. It would work great for making an overland track, I never thought of that. You should make some rocky shapes out of it, then paint it with non-skid type paint for traction.

schweet! i have something else in my project list haha. i have the board in my garage so when i have the cash ill start. i have a collection of hornby train models in my garage (00 scale) and was going to make a set like this but was turned away by cost- £5 for a set of tiny little people? lol i have a load of buildings and stuff aswell. i picked up a leaflet on making hills and it said about using polystyrene blocks, sand them down and use paper mache over the top so you can paint it.

Kel -- I used to have something like this in my basement, but we kept too much junk and it just had to go. Never got it finished, we made our own tables just as you have, it just never got landscaped. This makes me want to go work on ours again and set it all back up! Very cool design.

May I ask how large it is? (Length and width of the table and if you have the track length that'd be interesting to know as well.. )

The entire Table is 4' 6" by 6'6", which is quite large for a N scale layout, but I wanted to leave alot of room for scenary and buildings.

Kel you cost me to much money! First the MR-02, then the railroad project! Its really nice, now youve inspired me to start one of these, considering we have TONS of these train cars, and track and everything else! Nice work!

I painted the profile boards black and started the scenery on one side of the layout. It is looking very realistic so far. I have layed down the turf in various degrees and added different colors to get a realistic, aged look. Tell me what you guys think, and do you think the tunnel portals are too dark?

Still have all the buildings to do!
