Strange Overland problems... Like nothing I've seen before
My Overland is behaving really weird. Like nothing I've ever seen before - of course, I've not really seen much of it before because I've only had it 18 hrs or so.
Basic Background:
I bought it off of eBay used - it's already got some hopups on it (bb's, aluminum plate by the motor, x-speed motor, metal wheel nuts, etc)... They guy who sold it to me sold two of them at the same time, so he probably got confused. b/c the crystal in the body was a 2 and in the controller was a 1. I put the 3's from my McLaren MR-02 into the body and controller.
Problem #1a: KT-2 Controller not steering left
With a known-good #3 crystal in both the controller and the chasis, the car will move the wheels only to the right. I can adjust the steering trim to the left and the servo will move the wheels to the left. The controller, however, will not move the wheels to the left. (I will double check and try controlling my MR-02 with this controller later on today to make sure that controller is the problem)
Problem #1b: Contoller not going into reverse - even with double tapping
I know that you have to brake and then go into reverse. I do that, and it still doesn't do anything to put it into reverse. I can't even get the throttle trim to make the car go in reverse
Problem #1c: Steering trim knob and Steering D/R wheel do the same thing
On this KT-2 controller, the knob and the wheel to adjust the steering sensitivity both just adjust the steering trim. This seems like it is jacked up.
Other problems
All of these problems were addressed temporarily by using my KT-5 controller for my MR-02 to drive the Overland. After loosening the front wheel nuts (which were all the way tight for shipping, I presume) it handled well and was a speedy little demon. I had it going around the room, flipping over, and climbing steep inclines in no time.
Problem 2: Random inability to drive forward/reverse
Very close to the time that one set of batteries died, it started doing strange things. I can't remember if it did this before I replaced the batteries or not. I know it did this afterwards with more than one set of freshly charged batteries.
It would only go in reverse from my KT-05 controller, and only when it felt like it... once out of every couple of times I tried to do it. It would never go forward.
I thought I smoked the FET. It smelt a little hot - a bit like a smoked IC, but not as bad as I normally smell smoked IC's...
I tried using the other controller, and I can adjust the throttle trim on the KT-2 controller to make the wheels go forward. Back it off a bit, and they will go forward when I pull the trigger most of the time. But the same controller problem I had earlier is still there (can't steer wheels left, or go in reverse). I can't adjust the throttle trim on the KT-2 controller to make it go in reverse.
With the KT-5 controller it would ocasionally work if I held the throttle all the way down every once in a while the chasis would figure out what was going on and gun the engine... The wheels wouldn't ever spin with throttle trim adjustments.
I ordered some replacement FET's just in case, b/c I want to run it on Thursday night so I wanted to have them on hand in case I needed to replace them. I don't know if it is the FET or what it could be.
Is there a big difference between the KT-2 and KT-5 controllers? What can I do to fix the KT-2?
Any information would be appreciated to help me troubleshoot this strange problem.
i would dump the kt-2 and save up for the iwaver tx to run both or look around for another kt-2 or 5. some people will actually give them away.
Those controllers look really sweet - I particularly like the one for the Iwaver 04 (monster truck clone)... Is there anyway to get those controllers without getting an iWaver? Where is the best place/way to get one?

the difference in price between the 04 with the TX and the TX is so small go for the RTR...the 04 is a fun little basher

That is a good point. Too bad I don't live in Hong Kong. If I could get one for $50 I would do it today. The extra $20 makes me hesitate and put it off as more of a "get-later" kind of purchase.
Update: I am almost positive it is a smoked FET at this point. I rigged the controller back up and looked more carefully at the wheels. Even though the controller trigger is pulled, the wheels are actually spinning in reverse. So - the car goes in reverse but not forwards - a classic case of a smoked FET it sounds like. Good thing I ordered some replacement FETs from Mouser today...
I am impressed - I smoked a FET in less than an hour of driving.
