AZGT/F1/ATM Schedules

***November AZGT, F1, ATM Schedule***

Its time to begin our multi-series race days with the AZGT, Formula 1, and Timex ATM series. Since schedules are tight for the holidays and we're trying to pack three races into one day, the 24th will be a test-run non-points day. This will give everyone time to tune their new cars and allow us to work out any kinks in the system. The actual points-paying series will start in January.

So now is the time to try aggressive or crazy setups and see what works. I'll see you all on the 24th at DJ's.

For convenience I'll be posting the schedules in this thread since all three series happen on the same day. Race day results, along with discussions, pictures, etc should be posted in their individual series threads. This thread will only be about the day's scheduling.

Hood has worked out a plan to mix the day's racing so anyone not running in a particular series doesn't have to wait a long time for that class to come up. These times are only guides and we'll start things early when possible.

Mini-AZ Day
Week 1: AZGT Sprint/ 158 lap F1/ ATM
At the Nessie Circuit

Saturday, November 24th
Don Jackson Enterprises / Phoenix Porsche
1931 W. North Ln. (19th Ave and Peoria)

Open Session
9:30 Track Setup and Open Testing
Practice and Qualifying
10:00 Practice AZGT/F1/ATM
11:30 Qualifying AZGT/F1/ATM
Race
12:00 ATM Stage I & II
12:30 AZGT Sprint A & B
1:00 F1 Race
2:00 ATM Stage III
2:30 AZGT Sprint C
Open Session
3:00 Open track
3:30 Tear Down and Cleanup

The weather is great and DJ's shop is nice and cool. Hope to see you all there!

Feeling Cheated

Since Dusty posted the schedule I belive AZGT is being shorted. We only get one direction now!!!! We have gone both directions in the past why not continue. We can alter the schedule at the end to include CCW.

Open Session
9:30 Track Setup and Open Testing
Practice and Qualifying
10:00 Practice AZGT/F1/ATM
11:30 Qualifying AZGT/F1/ATM
Race
12:00 ATM Stage I & II
12:30 AZGT Sprint A & B
1:00 F1 Race
2:00 ATM Stage III
2:30 AZGT Sprint C
3:00 AZGT CCW Practice
3:30 AZGT CCW Sprint A & B
3:30 AZGT CCW Sprint C
ALL CCW RAN BACK TO BACK TO BACK

I just don't see why we can't continue AZGT as it has been

The end-of-day Open Session gives us some extra wiggle room on the schedule since things typically run long rather than short. It also give people the chance to run their other cars.

On the other hand, the three AZGT Sprint rounds should be run-able in 30min (but if a driver has a pre-race problem, he's out of luck. There'll be no time to wait). And since we're running F1 and AWD now that only leaves the Mod cars without track time, of which I think there are only two cars in the club.

So we'll see how smoothly things go on-the-day, since this is just a test day. If everyone decides they want to squeeze the time in for the CCW round then we can expand the schedule.

I remember for Season II, I planned four Sprint rounds in one day. On opening day we discovered we could practically only get in two, and that was for just the AZGT. We've got things running smoothly now so we can fit more in, but the day is getting loaded up.

Yasuji, like Joe said, we only have a couple Mod cars in the club so not enough for a series. Pan cars are legal for our AZGT series though.

You could always run the Mod car during practice. We typically have a spare series-legal car you can race as well.

Due to holiday schedules we are only meeting once in December. We'll be running the OLPS Season IV finale on December 15th. So short track only. I'll be posting the announcement/time/location soon in the OLPS thread in this sub-forum.

While you're here check out Speed Sports next door to Deer Valley Airport (19th Ave and Deer Valley). They are putting together Phoenix's only indoor track. It's primarily 1:10 scale, but we hope to get the Z's in there. The space is huge so you could really open up a Mod car.

After running the November Event we have decided to change the schedule up a bit. We will eliminate the Qualifying for the ATM and AZGT series, and run the different classes individually. We will also be running the AZGT CCW Direction as well.

I believe the new schedule will look something like this.

Open Session
9:30 Track Setup and Open Testing

Practice and Qualifying
10:00 Practice AZGT/F1/ATM

Race
12:00 AZGT Sprint A, B, and C
1:00 ATM Stage I, II, and III
2:00 F1 3 KO qualifying races and Main Event
3:00 AZGT CCW Practice
3:30 AZGT CCW Sprint A, B, and C
4:00 Tear Down and Cleanup

The race stages can go by in much less than an hour, so the schedule will be flexible. I think we should allow a 10 minute hold on any race if you need time to be able to get your car ready.

After receiving various input on the three new series from our test run I've made a few final modifications to the regulations. We will also be running the three series in a linear schedule rather than mixing as we tried last week. This will avoid jumping from car to car and swapping out equipment making things progress smoothly.

Based on Brad's FET mishap I've reworded the motor rules to exempt clearly non-motor related issues. No sense in getting disqualified over wiring.

The updated regs PDF and Cliff Notes for each is located in that series' thread. You still have over a month to become familiar with the regulations. Ask questions now if you don't understand something so you don't lose out on race day. (Remember, the General Regulations section is the same for all three).

And remember the General Regulation regarding traffic: “It is the responsibility of the overtaking driver to pass safely under all circumstances”. Collisions are not Turn #1's fault.

***January AZGT, F1, ATM Schedule***

We've had our test day and worked out the kinks, and now begins the points battle in the AZGT, Formula 1, and ATM series. Be sure you're up-to-date on the finalized regulations, which are attached as PDF in their respective threads.

We've re-organized the schedule based on the results from the November test. I'm making one last adjustment to keep things tightened up. If we run long we still have the leeway as in Hood's previous post, and F1 will still only be about 35min so that creates a gap. I just want to keep things moving so we don't slide and end up cleaning up at 5pm.

*** AZGT/ATM/F1, Week 1 Results ***

Our multi-series days are underway with the launch of AZGT Season IV, ATM Season I, and Formula 1 Season I. It was a very full day of racing but a great opportunity to run our other cars that typically get less attention. Fortunately we worked the kinks out back in November with a test day, so today everything ran smoothly.

Surprisingly we only had one traction roll during the ATM (All Wheel Drive Touring Masters) race, in sharp contrast to our November test when the cars were upside down more often than right side up.

There were numerous close position battles in the AZGT and ATM, just check out some of those finishing laps! Unfortunately we only have three cars currently taking the field in F1, but its still a race and those cars are great fun to drive. Distinctly different from the MR-02 and MA-010 chassis.

The Hoot-of-the-Day had to be in the F1 race and I was leading with about 20 laps to go, when my left front wheel rolled off the car. After a frantic search for the locknut, I reattached the wheel and got back in to retain the lead. After the race I discovered my right front wheel was only laps away from falling off as well.

Given there are only three drivers currently in F1 and the races will usually take about 30min, I'm thinking of cutting them down from 1/2 distance of a real race to 1/4. So the average race should take around 15min to run. This will buy us a little more room in the schedule too.

I had planned to post the results separately in their individual threads, but it just seems easier to post them all here. So below are the results and standings for all three series.

***February AZGT, F1, ATM Schedule***

Our multi-series race day is off to a good start. Everything ran smoothly in January and it was great fun running those oft neglected AWD and F1's.

I'm making one small adjustment to the schedule and F1 to fine tune our timing. F1 will now be 1/4 real distance rather than 1/2, so races will only run about 10-15min instead of a half hour.

That frees up time for lunch. I placed it after the first round of AZGT, but obviously we can move it to wherever we're hungry that day. But this way we're not trying to squeeze lunch into an otherwise very full day.

Mini-AZ Day
Week 2: AZGT Sprint / F1 / ATM

Saturday, February 23rd
Don Jackson Enterprises / Phoenix Porsche
1931 W. North Ln. (19th Ave and Peoria)

Open Session
9:30 Track Setup and Open Testing
Practice and Qualifying
10:00 Practice AZGT/F1/ATM

12:30 Lunch
1:00 ATM Stage I/II/III
1:30 Formula 1 (95 laps)
2:00 AZGT CCW Practice
2:30 AZGT CCW Sprint A/B/C

3:00 Open Track
3:30 Tear Down and Cleanup

Hope to see you all there!

***March AZGT, F1, ATM Schedule***

Week 2 was a lot of fun and ran smoothly (if quite long, but it was a casual, unhurried race day). Shortening the F1 race to 1/4 real distance appears to be the right balance, and the AWD's have worked out as a blast.

It's difficult to fit three series into one day, but we've got the kinks worked out and I'm having a great time racing with you all.

Week 3 marks the mid season for all three series, and the Petit Le Mans round for the AZGT. So two 30min races this time around. Remember there is no longer mandatory pitting (in any of the series).

The Design Pool has reset and everyone is in the draw list again. First up is Bill with the design shown below.

*** AZGT/ATM/F1, Week 2 Results ***

That was a fun day! Joe made an interesting track. Flowed nice Clockwise, and whooped our butts Counterclockwise. All three series ran nicely with some very close lap counts. Our group is running closer and closer together.

The ATM was a blast maneuvering those cars around the track, and 1/4 distance worked out to be just right for the F1. I even won my first AZGT round in about two years!

Bill had to miss the races due to a schedule conflict, which is why you see his standings fall a bit. Hopefully he can makeup ground over the next few races.

I'm looking forward to the next round in March. Don't forget this will be the 30min Petit Le Mans round for the AZGT. The ATM and F1 formats remain the same.

*** AZGT/ATM/F1, Week 3 Results ***

At mid-season we ran the Petit Le Mans round of the AZGT for a fun 30min mini-enduro (F1 and ATM do not change format). We welcome a new driver, Randy, to the field. He did pretty well by the Counterclockwise round, and even set Fastest Lap Time. And one of our old drivers, Sean, was able to join us today to get in some points.

With eight cars on track there was surprisingly little contact. In the second round there was a bit more carnage though resulting in a couple DNFs. Overall it went well though. Bill made us a fun, fast track.

Pit strategy was the name of the game today. I managed to eek out every milliamp from my batteries to not stop and pit, allowing me to make up a great deal of laps on everyone. By the Counterclockwise round of course, the secret was out and most everyone stretched their batteries to the limit. Great fun.

The exciting battle appears to be in the ATM series as the field runs very close together. Check out those finish margins! Hood and I battled it out for every point today. I was able to pull away at the end though when Hood damaged a Tie Rod.

The F1 race was shorter than usual. Due to a typo that I just noticed, the race was only 58 laps instead of the scheduled 85 lap distance (1/4 real distance at 1:24 scale). Oh well, we were running long today anyhow.
