Alternate DC GTG Locations.

Thought I'd start a new thread specifically for this discussion.

As Arch2B mention, I do think the location of Hobbyworks was good for most people. I think a Northern VA location would make it easy for those coming from MD, DC and southern VA.

I'm gonna look into some options in my area, Reston, since it's still pretty central and close to a highway(267). A community center might be perfect and since I already pay dues, hopefully there's something reasonable.

Also if we're really serious about the paying, my condo's community room is quite nice. There's a little movie area with a flatscreen TV to take breaks between heats, a full blown kitchen to fix yourself some meals, and a pool table if you get bored. The one problem is to officially reserve the space, it costs $100. I'd also have to put a $200 damage deposit as well.

well, if we can continually get 10 people to show up, it's only $10 each and a $20 season retainer so to speak.

bigger issue is, where do we store possible 3/4 wide l tracks? james can confirm the headaches that involve having to pack up track to drag along.

don't worry about a track pc. worse case, i can always bring my notebook. it's easy to travel with. i'm getting a new one next spring as well.

i'd love to be able to tell you i have news on my core but it's still a mystery when i'll get something back. michael is working on something for me, i just have not heard when i'll get it. needless to say the sooner the better.

It sounds like a good idea, since that damage fee is a deposit we should have that returned to us if we dont break anything right? 10 bucks is no big deal to race. As far as track, I dont know if I could do it all the time but I might be able to barrow a truck to bring down the 3 wide L's that me and Tallgeese have. Lets see where this goes and I will make arrangements accordingly.

I don't have a problem with paying a fee as long as its guaranteed space to race. I like the idea of racing at soulstice community center. Its a little more central and I like to play pool. Would it be possible soulstice hold races there in the schedule we have? Atleast for HFAY?

I'm currently looking into better boxes to store my track in. We get alot of catalogs at work from office supply and storage companies, and they have some pretty big durable storage containers, 1 of them if I'm correct on the diminsions should be big enough to hold atleast 1 maybe 2 wide L's. But the down side is they cost between 50 and 100 bucks a piece. If I can get my hands on some of these storage containers I would have no problems in bringing some track since I have a truck to move them with, but we'll see.

Of course I am new to the group, but, I must say, Hobbyworks, though not that far of a hike is far from central for people. Reston is even further away. I live on Capitol Hill and Hobbyworks is 25 miles and Reston is 35. In my 15 MPG suv, that is far from a short trip. Now if most of you live in Nova, then it is true that for most of you it is central but people in DC and particularly MD have quite a hike. In fact, the MD people one would think would go up to the Baltimore club meetings. Central would be North Alexandria or Arlington. Just my two cents. I will drive to Reston if needs be.

Sorry, but I have to chime in here. 25-35 miles to race with some awesome local Mini-Z guys is really not that bad. I'm coming in from Charlottesville which is about 100 miles from Fairfax...2 hours door to door. I think anyone within an hours drive of a club of this caliber is lucky...I'm just sayin'

Guys, from Baltimore, I am about 45 minutes from you in Northern VA.... I would be willing to pay for space, if you are willing to have me come to race.... =)

Once I get Baltimore going strong, together with DC, and PA, The East Coast will be a force to reckon with

Alexandria or Arlington would obviously be the most central but none of us live there or can host. The majority of us live in NoVA. And some people like Spoon and theRinger come quite a ways to make it to the GTG.

So I looked into other options and I may have found something that would be perfect. The Reston Community Center has rooms available in two location. The small room is meant to hold 15-25 people which might be a good size for us. I'll have to go and actually scope it out. If you need a larger space, these rooms can be expanded since they're adjacent to one another. The best part is since I'm a Reston resident, we can get a hefty discount on the order of 75% off the normal fee.

Small Room 15-25 = $6/HR
Medium Room 40-50 = $12/hr

So at a typical GTG, there's about 8 of us and we usually run for 6 hours. That would come out to a room rental fee of $4.50 per person for the day.

Chairs and Tables are provided for free and they would set it up. We could also reserve dates for up to a year in advance.
