I purchased a ball diff for my car, its made by Topcad (Eagle).
Im not very happy with its performance. If I loosen it off to give a better turning circle (but still not as good as the original diff) it slips loads.
If I tighten it up to get no slip the turning circle is abysmal and it still doesnt seem to accelerate as fast / feel as nippy. The gearing is identical (6T pinion) and I tried a fresh set of batteries but it still drove terrible.
I re fitted the original diff and my fun to drive Mini-Z is back.
Im driving mainly on carpet, tight and low top speed. Is the ball diff only good for high speed slippy surfaces ? Any suggestions ?
I haven't tried the TopCad diff (what color is it, it may be the same as RCRM?) but I've used the RCRM and Kyosho and from your description something is definitely wrong. How does the diff feel when you turn the wheels with your hands? Is it really smooth (much smoother than stock)? If not, it sounds like it may have some junk in it or it may be defective in some other way. Did you buy it at your LHS? If so you may want to take it in and have them look at it and see if a replacement feels any better.
I sat down and had a good look at the diff, because as you suggested it didnt feel quite right.
The ball race on the spur end was not sat properly / squarely in the hub. Its a very snug fit and as supplied was not sat squarely in. This meant the pressure on the diff balls was varying.
Seated the bearing properly (its a very tight fit, probably a liitle too much anodising) and it now works ok !
