New track - any suggestions before I pull the trigger?

As some of you now know we are going to have a fundraiser here at work using Xmod's trucks (cheaper to obtain) in a race for Relay for Life (American cancer society). We are going to allow racing for donations as well as have the executives race and donate.

In any case, in addition to helping organize it I've decided to contribute by buying a nice RCP track that we can use each year for this event since our funds for buying equipment are pretty limited. This will give the event a much more professional look than using PVC duck taped to the carpet floor. It has the additional benefit of giving me a track I can use at home for myself since I will be keeping the track and just donating it's use.

In any case, I've pretty much decided on 3 wide ovals since together they are currently cheaper than 2 wide L's and have a few more total pieces.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I pull the trigger on ordering this as to how well this will work with Xmod trucks? We have so far thought about adding humps/jumps in the track and probably one zig-zag section which could be skipped using a jump (risk versus reward).

I have a used Wide-L RCP Track that I don't use anymore. It has some cat scratches on it but other than that it's fine.

$120

Let me know.

with 3 wide Ovals you should be able to make several different layouts.

just make sure they are the wide Ovals and not the narrow ovals because the narrow ones greatly limit what configurations you can make.

even 2 ovals and 1 wide L (see post above) would make some really nice layouts.

Yep, definitely the wide ovals. I was originally interested in the mini-96 for home use but it's too narrow. I've got the space and need something big for the Charity fundraiser anyways so I might as well get the wide one.

Hey,

I've done a few charity events for my work for United Way. I've used the cheaparse iwaver00 cars (they were called tokoro runners). Basically they were clones of the kyosho palm runner cars. I got them cheap. They also have them from that chinese interest store everyone knows for like $5 each (but you have to buy a crapload).

Anyway, I ran those (only can run 3 at a time) and also CORE. It was a 2 day event. The 1st was ppl paid $5 and got to run the car on a 3 min timed warm up session, then do a 5 min qualifier. Then they could qualify as many times as possible (i.e. what they had money for). I used a LCD projector to show the core stuff to attract more interest.
Anyway, the racers were then split into mains of 3 each except for A main for which the B main 1st person got bumped up. At that time, I had everyone's names and departments and stuff and entered that info on CORE.

Then for the main races, the computer (CORE) said all the names accordingly.

The only thing that detracted from the event for some ppl was that they couldn't race the actual mains as they never qualified (i.e. didn't come out to that event). Anyway, that is the only down point.

Overall it went well. Do you have a timing system or are you going to count visually? Ppl love bling and CORE and some good speakers along with a mic really did the trick for my fund raiser.

Good luck.

Thankfully I believe I should have available to me a CORE timing system. I think it's critical to make it really interesting for people. We are in the cable equipment business so there are plenty of large plasma and other TV's around to use for display, as well as projectors. I'll be sure to take pics of the event and post them here.

One of the big fundraising aspects of it will involve an executive race with a talented guy from the sales dept. running the show. Last year on something much less exciting (in my opinion) than what we have this year he managed to spur them into giving many, many thousands of dollars. With that and opening it to the rest of the employees for short 5-7 minute paid races we hope to clear over $10k for the cancer fund. Companywide our company is one of the biggest fundraisers for Relay for Life in the area so I really hope this goes off well so we can do it again next year.

Maybe as an added bonus this will lead to some more interest in mini-z racing in the area.

Here is a pic of my track in the basement. I already want some more corners and a couple of straights but will probably resist. :

The shack (RS online). They seem to be blowing out their RCP stuff right now along with their Xmod stuff. That's why it was cheaper than 2 wide-Ls normally (although their price on wide L's would have made it more attractive had they been in stock). You also get a few extra pieces than with 2 wide-Ls but for some reason it came with a lot more bumpouts. That's either good or bad depending on your view. In any case, I just paid for the normal $6 shipping and they all arrived within about 3 days. Pretty good service. I'm pretty impressed with it all so far as it's been easy to work with, and really not near as "dusty" as I was expecting.
