USB Extender via Cat5e cable
core,
i wanted to ask if any of the usb extender products would be compliant with the core systems? the 15' or do you get with teh stock cord and usb extension cord just doesn't get the loop far enough away from everyone and i'm not moving my desk, wires and pc's so i'm looking for other options.
i've found a couple things that i'd like to know if they would work or not....
1st option is something like this
Quote:
Description
IOGEAR’s premium USB Active Extension Booster Cables support USB transmission up to 75 feet away (with purchase of additional Booster cables together). These cables are compliant to USB 1.1 standards, and compatible with both Mac and PC.
Features
Connect to USB devices up to 75 feet away (with additional Booster cables daisy chained together)
Built-in Booster Chip technology
Amplifies the USB signal to carry data over greater distances
USB 1.1 compliant
Premium quality cable
IOGEAR Limited Lifetime Warranty
|
a 2nd option would be this
Quote:
Description
The GUCE50 comprises two units, Local and Remote. These units are interconnected with Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 cabling. Now you can extend peripherals to locations up to 150 feet away.
Features
Use Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 RJ/45 cabling to extend your USB peripherals up to 150 feet away
Transparent data extension
Extremely easy to install
Compact design, allows for easy placement
Fully compliant with (1.0, 1.1) USB standards
For use with any USB compatible computer
|
i think somethign like this woudl work well for large events provided they would even be compatible. i know they are only usb1.1 compliant.... i have no idea if anyone makes usb2.0 compliant systems?

I have the same question.
arch2b: Did you ever buy one and try it? Or did you find out which may work?
Here is another option from CompUSA, and it's only $18.99:
USB 2.0 Active Extension Cable, Beige, 16.5 Feet, USB-A Male to USB-A Female
Description:
The USB Active Extension cables actively buffer the incoming and outgoing signals to ensure compliance with USB's revision 1.1 specification for electrical and timing minimums. You can connect up to 5 active extension cables end-to-end to achieve up to 80ft extension! Both low and high speed USB devices will function equally well with the USB Active Extension.

i did not want to spend any money until we got some feedback from core.... just waiting....
given the signal response time and accuracy requiremetns, is it even possible to make a wifi or wireless unit with a dedicated power supply? ultimately, that would be the best possible solution but also open up a huge can of worms regarding more hardware and increased complexity.

and possibly some RF interference. that would need to be tested alot.

This weekend, I'm going to test a USB extension cable I bought at Best Buy. It's only a 10 foot cable so I may take it back and find a longer one. I would at least like to have 15 feet. But this may be a good test, so I'll let you all know how it goes.

If it is a standard CAT5 cable then there is no reason why it should not work. CAT5 cables can be extremely long without loss of signal and interferance. The big clue that I see for it working is the fact that CORE doesn't offer a range of extension cords meaning that there wouldn't be a high enough demand or cheaper alternatives from other sources wouldn't justify their producing them.

I always use a (Monster cables) 10 usb extension cord I bought from Circuit City, I haven't had any problems at all with it. I'm need something long though. it is still a challenge to place the laptop near the staring line. If it would work with a 30ft. long cable that would be better.

the cables are USB not cat 5, if it will work with the USB to Cat5 adapeters is the question, only they are expensive, so we would like to know if they would work before spending the money on them.

Once you know, you Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812116123
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812149019
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812107284
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812107285
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812105707
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812116121
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812116131
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812105706
These should all be USB 2.0...and Newegg is probably the only retailer I know that would be likely to take a return if it doesn't work properly (they have amazing customer service). Of course at these prices, it probably wouldn't be worth bothering with a return...
They also have another Cat5/e/6-based extender (that is only $32 shipped for the refurbished OEM version, $45 for the retail version), though it doesn't seem to be USB 2.0 either, and I've never heard of Vigor (Iogear is a bit better known):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16812101152R
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812101152
Also, if you just need 15'+ USB (Mwave isn't bad either):
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec....iteria=3477685 (USB 2.0)
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec....iteria=3455874 (USB 1.1)
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec....iteria=1997115 (USB 1.1)
Arch: Let me know if you go the Iogear/Vigor Cat5/e/6 adapter route...I have loads of Cat5e on spools in my garage, we could cut to length, with plenty of spares.
I have to agree with Brian's note on Wifi and RF interference...it would need serious testing, not necessarily because of the Z's (I doubt there is any bleed between 27 mhz and 2.4 ghz, though I am not sure about the skip freqs), but because I can only assume Core is using RFID for their system, and two of the more often used frequencies for RFID (2.4 and 5.8) happen to coincide with the Wifi bands (B/G and A). You are much more likely to have interference with a transmitter sitting a foot or two away on a close frequency...

i happened to be browsig for an unrelated item and came across this nifty peice of hardwre, http://www.cables4sure.com/proddetai...~3-GXQU-15.htm
15ft gold usb cord with all the various adapter end plugs for a one cord solution that is just as long as the stock cord plus the extension cable. it's also cheaper than what most par paying for the extension cable alone.

We only have tested the system using passive (but high quality) 15ft usb cables. The active ones may introduce some latency. But, my guess is that the latency shouldn't affect the system too much.

Arch,
Did this cable work? I'm trying to set up a core system and I need a little more cable.
Thanks
Mike

i never saw any feedback on these thus i never bought one. i'm still open to the idea of using one as it would be nice to not have to worry about computer placement.
has anyone since way back when tried one of these?

You will definitely need a usb extender past 15 feet.... Look at the link below.
