4wd Mini-Z Caution: Hack job
I threw this Frankenstein together tonight (time span: about 5 hours) because I got inspiration from the 4wd Mini-Z Monster that one of Ikinari's friends put together.
Yes, I know I did a really bad job and that a stock MR-02 would probably kick its ass, but I thought that this would be quite interesting to do. It actually works quite well on carpet though and I can drift it around on my hardwood basement floor. The only problem is my extremely crappy steering setup, which you will see in a few seconds if you havn't already skipped to the pics. It binds past a certain point. I think I could fix that by putting another h-plate on top of the setup so the bottom one doesn't take all of the flex.
I used an old X-Speed up front with an 8 tooth pinion and a PN Speedy in the back with a 12 tooth pinion in order to even out acceleration between the two ends.
I know there is no way to fit a body onto this monstrosity, so don't tell me; I did this just to have a little fun. I might refine it a little bit and see what happens.
That's pretty much it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Just don't kill me for trying out my engineering/crappy fabrication skills.

Well I hope no one does question your engineering ability. I know I do not have the talent with electronics to build a 4wd. For a body for it you might want to check out DBR's lexan bodies, it might be a canidate for one of his SUV bodies.

Since it steers like a wagon I think you should make it look like a Radio Flyer with a bunch of stuff piled in it. That will also keep the cg low as possible. If it ends up kickin' butt, all the better.

Hah. There was no other feasible way to do the steering within a short period of time. A Mini-X or X Mod type steering system would take a long time to engineer and build, but it would definitely work a lot better.

That reminds me of a Tamya Hornet r/c , that we converted to "front wheel drive".We used the same idea with the rearend mounted up front on a piviot.

How does that thing steer? Gotta hand it to you for the innovative design & idea, though.

your front and rear gearing is different? and so is the motor?
i dont think thats good for ur motors....
this is still pretty cool tho
any chance that you can get a video?

Ever think to just use a mini-z pcb in a 4wd x-mod?

The front and rear gearing is different, but I geared the front motor lower (since it was slower) in order for it to catch up to the rear motor. It is actually almost dead-on equal in terms of acceleration and top speed. I will try to get a video. Can I attach them in a post on here?

No, I still like it, It was just the most convenient thing to use at the time since it had a lot of chassis space. I am still taking good care of it.

The servo moves the whole front motor pod left and right.

I didn't want to do that because the X-Mods have crappy turding radii and the rear suspension is junk. I'm working on that in a different (non-hackish) project though.

Well, you can get new resistors from RadioShack for $2 (a cheap, easier alternative to AtomicMod's Tight Turns mod) and you could solder them into your Xmod for a greatly improved turning radius, but you'd have to trim the steering knuckles and the horns that stick out under the tie rod. Also, you'd have to get the Wide Track Bearings and for the rear suspension you could lock it, put in a trishock, or use a strut bar from CXP. I'm suprised that your FWD and RWD systems don't trip over each other, you could make an Xmods-style AWD system, it's just that you'd REALLY have to modify the electronics to get a driveshaft that would work, and it would be hard to get the FWD pieces working. And with your steering? ....Umm.... I'm not really sure that really qualifies as 'steering'.... it's more of 'shifting' the front wheels side to side. But hey... Whatever works.

I can see a radio flyer body on that, in fact the one you could get at Radio Shack with the batteries is the perfect size. If they still have them, at mine I saw two the last time I was in there.

The n and the d keys are quite far apart on my keyboard. I don't know how that happened, but you know what I meant.

That's why I thought the "turd" part was on purpose. That's right on the money. lol.
