Chezedog will love this: Slot Cars in Africa

As Chezedog may remember me saying, my 13 year old son Tyler who lives in South Africa is a big slot car fan.

While I was over there on vacation, I visited his local slot car track and wow was I amazed.
It's a 12 lane track, 52 metres long (+- 172 foot) with electronic photo-optic timing.
The track is wood, so no magnets to aid traction.
Each lane is powered by a 15VDC / 8 Ampere power supply, in fact they use PFC class PC power supplies that are powered up and timed via a central computer.
Braking is also supported, once you release the throttle, it causes a dead short across the motor( a-la an TRC ESC) resulting in awesome braking, especially with the foam tires on the Parma Group-C cars

It's amazing to see some of the variable resistance hand controllers used by racers there, wow this sport has come long way since I toyed with Scalextric.

They run various classes of plastic cars and those awesome Parma 1/32 Group-C cars with 16D motors, foam rear tires, lexan bodyshells and a movable steel chassis.
Here's a pic of the basic (motorless) kit:

My kid races most classes and when I was there, I bought two Parma 1/32 scale Group-C cars.
Down the main straight the Group-3 cars do in excess of 70 km/h (+-43 mph).
My son's track record with a Parma 1/32 is 6.18 seconds. Amazing!
My personal best is 7.38 seconds, and the track record for a 1/32 Parma is 6.08 seconds

Here's a link to the pictures of the track which is named Scale-X-Trac SC

Oh, I must mention, we did run three Mini-Z F1 cars on this track one Sunday when it was quiet.
Two had Kyosho slicks and one had standard tires.
There was too much grip, and the Mini-Z F1 tires would pick up all the loose rubber "marbles" from the track which would build up in the middle of the slicks, resulting in some awesome spin outs.

The Mini-Z F1s were all modified with X-Speed motors, bearings and Kyosho ball-diffs, but they seemed a little slow compared to the Parma 1/32 Group-C slot cars.

Yes, I had a lot of fun
