If you ever want to use high end electronics on the Mini-Z, you would need a receiver, speed controller and servo controller (wired to the integrated servo motor and potentiometer).

Hope this info helps...
OK - gotcha. This is all starting to make a lot more sense now. Thanks guys!

There's a banner ad on this site for a MRCG1.1 but when you click it the product is out-of-stock and seems as if it's actually discontinued.

Are the Kyosho alternatives: 1) so popular that they're sold out everywhere, 2) not popular any more and effectively dead, or 3) a sign that this entire scale is dying?

I'm a huge fan of Kyosho and really excited about Mini-Z (we're buying a ton of cars and equipment to set up a racing club at my work and at one of our conferences next year).

Just wondering what the state of the market is. Growing, flat, or losing steam?
Mike, I wouldn't really consider the Serpent an alternative, it's quite a different genre vs. other chassis that are typically intended to run Mini-Z AutoScale or pan car bodies, Mini-Z motors, AAA batteries etc. - i.e. maybe they don't run in the same class as stock chassis Mini-Zs, but are designed to appeal to Mini-Z racers, whereas the Serpent is more of an extra-small pan car.
The alternative chassis tend to go in waves - there's usually a lot of excitement on release and a lot of the more hard-core among us pick one up to see what it's about, what it does well, how the designer solved certain problems, etc. In addition, they are typically done in small runs, like the MRCG, which you'll find in our Made by Members section because it was designed by forum member color0, and if I recall correctly, we funded a lot of the initial production. If you are interested in the MRCG, we can certainly still get you one,

This is always going to be a tiny niche vs. off-the-shelf, just like the number of people who modify their 1:1 cars vs. those who never go for more than an oil change.

Thanks - that makes total sense. My interest in the aftermarket chassis is just as you described it: I'm curious to see how the designer solved problems/made improvements. I actually did end up finding an MRCG on one of the retailer sites but haven't ordered it yet. I have to place a bunch of big orders over the next few weeks so I'll fit it into one of them.

I appreciate the info everyone!

There used to be a German company that made totally, gorgeous carbon-fiber and alloy aftermarket chassis for the Z's. But I haven't seen them in years since the first MR02 came out.

I know exactly what and who you're talking about, but they've long fallen off the radar. At the moment I think it's just Lajf that still has stock of the P28, my MRCG's and MRCG1.1's are long sold out and it's going to be a while till the time is right for the next wave of these kinds of products.
