Sports 2 electronics Upgrade opinions

HI all,

I own 3 s2 Mro3s. I have been racing them with 70T pn motors with surprisingly little trouble. I am tired, however, of the limited gear ratios PN recommends I use with the weak electronics and the lack of adjustability of the KT-19 transmitter. Thinking of upgrading, I am leaning towards PN brushed spektrum board and a new Spektrum radio. Perhaps later I will make a PN Spektrum Brushless car. Anyone have much experience with these set ups? Any advice on Spektrum radios or reasons to not do this? My other option seems to be trying to find an ASF board and paying $300 for an EX6 (if I can find one in stock) The kyosho boards and the Pn boards seem about to the same price and the Spektrum seem more readily available and considerably cheaper. Any expertise on this would be appreciated. Thank you!

You can often find asf radios on eBay for $150 or so. I use a Helios, and don't find myself to be handicapped against the faster response of newer radios.

There are ASF brushed clone boards floating around for around $45... so that would be the cheapest conversion method.

Spektrum is a viable option if you already have a radio. If not, i personally wouldn't go that route. It makes more sense to just go with asf, or if you want the ultimate performance, a sanwa radio with micro rx, seperate micro ESC and a servo control board from PN. The PN 2.5 chassis has better real estate to mount the aftermarket electronics on.

Outfitting multiple cars, it makes more sense to go with the asf. Especially since you could then just swap to a brushless car with a board and motor swap.

There are a couple threads on the DasMikro boards, HEREand HERE. They are available in varying radio systems; FUTABA SFHSS, DSM2 DSMX, KYOSHO ASF, Flysky. It's what everyone really longed for with the scale, a broad selection of available systems you can choose from. I wish this had been around much sooner. One of the things they do not currently have is an ASF brushless board.

You can still find Helios, EX10, 5-UR ASF radios on eBay fore reasonable cost. DasMikro also makes a Kyosho MHS/ASF Compatible 2.4GHz Full Range RF TX Module.

Thanks guys. I definitely am not trying to get the fastest possible response or get anything too crazy. This sounds like it might be a good solution. I have seen the older radios on Ebay, but I am confused about the modules. Some include them and some don't. What do I need to look for?

The common ASF module for KoPropo stuff is the 901sm. If you look around, you can usually find an EX-1UR or a Mars with the module for about $125. For whatever reason, the modules alone are $$$.

I'm using an EX-1UR with a 901sm module, and I also have the 27mhz crystal module, so I can use it with my old MR01 and MR02 cars. I've swapped a couple of those DasMikro boards into MR02 chassis, and one into a Sport. It also works with my brand-new brushless car.

The 902SM ASF module is exclusively made for the newer style EX-10 Eurus. The 901SM works with the older style EX-10 Helios, and EX-1 style variants .

I believe the 902SM works for the older EX-10 Helios and the Eurus both but the 901SM will not work for the Eurus.

Pretty sure that the 902 doesn't work on Helios, but does with ex1-ur. Ex1-ur can use both modules, eurus needs 902 and Helios 901... not sure, but I remember the ex1-ur being capable of both modules.

Well, thank you to everyone for your help. Ebay was too confusing figuring out the old controllers. So many of them didn't seem to come with the correct module. I had a good month selling some of my old stuff and ended up getting a decent deal on a new EX-6r. I also have the DasMikro ASF Brushed board. Maybe I will try the MHS brushless later. I'm excited to give this set-up a try!

Yes! everything is working well. I love the new radio, although I am sure I'm not utilizing many of its features. I like the clone boards, but the servo really buzzes and twitches a little when the car is sitting on a bench. I was worried I wasnt going to be able to ţell the difference, but the EX -6R is much smoother and more precise, and I can dial in more steering than a stock Sports 2 if I want it. I just wish I had more time to mess with it and learn all the features. I have 98 mm and 94 mm HFAY cars that I am running with this set up.

I found a really good deal on a new Kyosho brushless board as well, but I haven't tried it yet. Brushless motors cost a lot more! I will pick one up soon and try it out. In the meantime I am using the old Sports 2 boards and spare parts to build project cars. I have a dream of having a fleet of 60s era Le Man's cars. I have collected several bodies, but they need some paint and styrene work, so it will be awhile. I seen to be amassing a fleet.
