Just How Important Motors Really Are:
MR-01/02
Here is the lifelong search for the journeys end of the question that I've always looked for an answer to: Is a faster motor going to yeild faster lap time? NOT ALWAYS.
Even on large tracks! I race in NJ and in SI NY. They are BIG tracks. Mainly 3 tile wide with LONG straights. I find normal stock fet motors such as the Speedy 05 and the Speedy BB 05 and the Kyosho X-Speed being more than enough on a 9T pinion.
The way I came to this conclusion was that, even though you will have great speed on the straights with a fetted car with a motor such as the PN Anima or the PN Sabre or Z2's or X2's. You have to slow down, and these motors are so punchy, that you find yourself OFF of the throttle more than ON. Leaving you to (figuretively speaking) STEER with your throttle rather than your wheel. Which yields slower lap times due to taking wider arcs that are uncontrolable.
In mod / stock class, no matter where I race, I can't help but notice that stock class with slower cars, almost ALWAYS do more laps in the main than the modified cars.
So in conclusion, don't over do it on your motor.
Another thing I found about motors: If you speed check a motor that goes 35kph, and another that does 30kph, the one that does 30 will almost always be faster on the track than the one that does 35. Reason to this is because the one that does 30, may just be limited by its torque, and the one that does 35 probably doesn't have enough torque to get you to that speed once that car and its weight is put onto the floor. So a rule of thumb would be not to go by what the speed checker says, but go by riding with a partner that you know has a fast motor, because no 2 motors or boards are the same. My modified reads 32 with a 8T pinion. And stock reads 33, however the modified and stock running neck and neck and full spin up speed, the modified BLOWS my stocks doors off.

Yes... speed is not everything. Hopped motors and turbo boards are fun, but not always the quickest way around a track. I find that one of the most noticeable characteristics to having a hopped motor and a hopped board is the loading and unloading effect it has on the suspension, this proves to be an interesting dynamic that can take some time to setup a car for. NeoMag motors also have this effect as well, sure you crank out of the corners, but trying to "float" into them is harder because the car decellerates quicker.
If you check the times on HFAY... there really isn't that much of a gap between the classes, although, I'm sure if the tracks were larger, the gaps would grow.
My nephew had the slowest car in our last HFAY event, but he won because his car was easily controllable through the turns, and had better overall flow.
Flow is key ! It seems to me that the one driver skill, in finding the right pace for yourself, is the way to becoming a great driver.
Also... don't trust the speedcheckers... I've seen cars put some great numbers on them, only to see them die out there in traffic, and vice-versa !

excellently described and written. i agree whole heartedly.
about the only thing super hot motors and huge fet stacks are good for are speed runs or drags. anyone can make a car go fast, but at some point you have to turn

Which is why I was using an X-Speed in an Atomic can for months as my mod car motor, and I allways placed decently... Of course, when Magic drove my car for one heat before he built up his mod car... it was a sight to see. He had almost 10 laps on the stock class laps in an 8 minute heat.
Right now I am using an old school S04 (from Titanium) with a 7t pinion, and it feels very good. I cant say that it is a better or worse motor, since I changed the body of the car from a VDS to a 575GTC... With a few other setup changes, the car handles very well, I would say possibly the best setup mod car at the track.

I just placed an order for the Pn AWD motor (not the macho modified) and also placed an order for the Fet Stock motor. They are very cheap, and I've seen the FS motor do wonders. And I'm sure the AWD is going to be fine. As EMU and I stated in this thread, speed isn't as important as handling/control.
I'll let you guys know how those motors do when they come in. I got both for under 30 bucks. Good enough for me

Did you order the tires that I posted in the tire thread? I would love to see how the FS works on the AWD... Although I would think it would do better in a BB can with Neo's Of course, we can test different configs.

No I didn't order any tires, no need as of right now, all cars are workin just fine. So you mean to tell me the FS is with no neos, and has no bearings? That suckers gonna need a BB can. I fetted my AWD. 2 fets on forward, stock reverse. Nothing crazy, just put a PN Sabre in it from my feted overland. Just to experiment when I get to jersey this Wed. I saved the stock fet. I'm probably going to revert if it's too crazy. I predict rolls and too much understeer. In the end, I'll end up throwing the Pn AWD motor in my AWD, and seeing where the FS is gonna want to call home. If they are good, I may order another one of each. Either that or one of the S0's

another problem of those fetted and powermotor cars is that you have to much punch in that way that you make more and bigger mistakes...
if i drive my fetted 02 with speedy O5BB or i drive my bone stock 02 with the X-speed the lap times are almost the same.
and if i drive my fetted car for 20 minutes i'm exhausted on our technical track, if i drive the stock racer i can go on for hours !!
my opinion is that i rather drive the stock one, more pleasure of driving it....

I feel the same way about stock mr 02's. I love doing endurance races with them.
