Route 246 (Kyosho) LiPe Mini-Z batteries

Hi,

First off in case you didn't know, the brand "Route 246 Planning", better know as "R246" is owned by Kyosho.

Secondly, they offer Lithium Iron (LiFe) cells for Mini-Z. These can fit into the MR-02 and MR-03 chassis without modification; MR-15 requires some modification. However, you need to use their special (aluminum) battery clips which match the cells or you can modify some existing spare (plastic) clips.

I'd like to know if anyone is interested in me bringing some into the shop to try out. LiFe cells are 3.3V so a little less voltage than LiPo Cells (3.7V).

There is a slight catch. Kyosho America only has the cells in stock. They do not stock the special battery clips at this time. As noted above, you can modify a pair of existing plastic ones (one of your spares).

Let me know if anybody wants to get it a try.

I was wondering if they would fit in a MA chassis if the battery contacts were removed. Can you use a Li-Po charger or do you need a Li-Fe charger? Might be something to try out.

More details:

These cells are 800 Mah.
No balancer is needed if each "bank" is charged separately.
Total voltage will 6.6V (3.3V x 2).
Stock FETs should be okay.

I have a couple more pairs coming for others to try out. I will be trying out mine this weekend as noted (Saturday Mar 13)

Won't that pose a bit of a strain on the existing electronics? Nominal voltage of 4S NiMH cells is 4.8V...

If they are only 800 mAh ea, how will the run time stack up against the typical 3000-4000 mAh NiMH setup?

According to my Kyosho USA rep, he said that stock electronics should/would be okay with these cells

Re: run time, remember that your cells are in series, so a group of 800 mah cells, still means 800 mah total. At least that was the way it was explained to me.

My expirence with does Li-Fe:

After testing them yesterday i got very mixed feelings.
the 6,6 Voltage is killing, even with a normal Chilli i had to reduce Motor power down 50% to be able to handle the Car.

Motor not getting hotter then with normal Orion 900, the Li-Fe it self heating up almost nothing at all, compare to normal Cell who getting hot.
The Board is upgreadet with 4562, 4 x times on ASF Board, the Li-Fe default connector got replaced with 1,5mm GoldConnector.

However since the only got 800mAh the are empty after max 10 min, since we drive 15 to 20 min in Finals can't use them.

When loading each cell only loads up around 400mAh so the 800mAh is from both.

Just took delivery of the charging cords from Kyosho (R246 part). This cable has both the plug for the charger (power) along with balancer plug.

Still waiting for R246 side clips for MR-02/MR-03 along with the cable to connect the cells to board power.

The stock mini-z board can handle up to 10 volts. 6.6 volts should be no problem.

Hey Herman It's definately been a while. Glad to see you're still on the board. As long as there's a Mini-Z track somewhere, I'll be racing on it. I think I'm destined to drive Mini-Z's for life.

The batteries work very good with MR02 and AWD but with the MR03 the twitch problem get worse.
My two MR03:s went totally bananas :-(

I love the batteries in AWD because it fits without any problems at all.
And the AWD need the extra power.
