Lightbulb Rwd ma-10?

This idea got me curious because for shorter wheelbases, MA-10's weight distribution is far superior to MR RM setup. There's no weight in the rear, so front lifting off will never be a problem; there are springs on all knuckles which I think maybe better than h-plates + DDS; taking out the front diff will allow an ideal place for a front ballast if there's ever a need for one there. Maintenence price aside, what do you guys think?

give it a try. i imagine all you have to do is cut the teeth off an old front spur gear.

I think a small dummy holder will be enough and lack of the diff will remove a few grams. Do you know of such experiments from the past, Arch, or no one really bothered? My real drive was to essentially bring an xmod-balanced chassis into the Z scene, but avoiding xmods' fragile and extra-bulky build.

As did I and I'd do it again with good parts to reach a certain conclusion. Last try was stock diffs + speedy 07 = busted spider gears left and right.

Here we are:

I tried the white styrene tab with the gear still on, but that created alot of heat due to friction, so I decided to simply ditch the gear. Added 1mm of padding vs .5 to keep that shaft in place.

Running on hardwood it did pretty good. The front wheels free spin MUCH better than my MR, plus I can tighten the nut all the way and not worry about a thing. I'll think about shaving weight and may debut this thing at the next hfay if there are no objections. Current weight is 194g which is well above most MR02s out there.

Sorry, it's rare that there are rule conflicts but you can't run an AWD as a 2WD in HFAY. The chassis dictates the drivetrain except in Xmods where it is interchangeable. That is the difference, meaning that there was no original design intention for the Kyosho MA010 chassis to be driven in a 2WD configuration whereas the Xmods had that intention from the get-go.

I know the rule seems strange but it's basically there just to avoid conflict.

You are the tinkerer though, no doubt. The CG benefits are there in your scheme... but I'm not sure if the traction will be balanced enough on an RCP (inherent battery displacement with the MA010).

Honestly, I thought I'd see someone try a pure front wheel drive setup first.

thanks for the explination ed! here is a link to the rules.

what i was discussing with skv this past weekend was and is a very possible scenario with an awd; the loss of the front diff while racing. this essenitally puts you in the position of completing a race under rwd as there are no rules specifically requiring one to repair a failure before completeing a race. i've finished plenty of races on 3 tires and or wheels for example.

i'm not suggesting anyone design a situation in which a failure occurs on purpose to allow an ma-010 to run rwd.

Well, my only argument for allowing this setup is that its MUCH heavies than all MR02 and 15s, so its at a horrible disadvantage in weight as a RWD car. I know hfay disallows severe reduction, but I don't see why adding weight would be a problem.

Also, Ed, I've taken Matt's 4-7g ballast advise to balance out the batteries as you can see in the above pics. Once again thats adding weight to it, but I'm very curious to see how it would perform once its 90%all-around balanced.

Very curious to know how a RWD MA-010 handles compared to an MR-02. Please keep us posted!

Minor amend: added a bushing in front of the bearing to keep the shaft from popping it out if I pull it too far back and re-insert it. Also using 1 piece of styrene with thicker edges and thin middle instead of 2 pieces to free up the shaft as much as possible.

This got approved for HFAY by Brian, so if anyone is curious enough to try this setup- feel free now.

It has the handling of the MA and the top speed of the MR. Weight in between MR02 and awd MA.
